Chapter 20
Boggs opened her eyes Sunday morning and saw Mr. Rupert staring at her. The spot next to her was empty. He climbed on her chest and sat down.
“Uh, you’re a little heavy there, boy,” she said.
He meowed loudly and began kneading her chest.
“Ugh,” she said with a little difficulty. “Are you trying to tell me to get my ass out of bed?”
“I think he is,” Toni called from the hall. “The coffee is ready and I’m making scrambled eggs with cheese. Does that sound okay to you?”
Mr. Rupert jumped off Boggs and headed downstairs. Obviously it sounded good to him.
“That sounds wonderful. What time is it?” Boggs looked around for the alarm clock.
“It’s almost nine. I figured you’d want to get up soon, so I sent Mr. Rupert up to wake you.”
“He completed his mission.” Boggs laughed as she climbed out of bed.
Toni kissed her lightly on the cheek. “I’ll go start the eggs.”
Boggs watched her walk away, dressed only in a T-shirt. That was one beautiful woman. She looked even better in a T-shirt than she did in a suit. Boggs smiled. Could she get used to waking up this way every day? Sharing a bed? An apartment? Their lives? Last night was wonderful, just watching television and eating popcorn. She couldn’t remember ever falling asleep and being so comfortable like that before. Even when she’d dated someone in the past, she always felt the urge to get up and go home. No matter how late it was, she always preferred to wake up in her own bed. And if she did spend the night she was anxious to leave the next morning. She didn’t feel that way with Toni.
But could she do this on a permanent basis? Do I love her? Could she commit to a real relationship? And never sleep with another woman? Never play the field again? Never do whatever the hell she wanted whenever the hell she felt like it?
She began to panic. She had never been in a relationship that lasted more than a few months at most. Even though her parents had remained married until she was in high school, they fought constantly and seemed to hate each other. She didn’t want that.
Maybe it would be easier if she just got out now. It would save her one hell of a lot of heartache later, of that she felt sure. Better safe than sorry.
That was her attitude when she pulled on a pair of sweatpants and went downstairs, but when she saw Toni standing in the kitchen, her heart melted. There was a fresh cup of coffee and two plates on the dining room table, along with napkins, salt and pepper. The Sunday paper lay next to her cup. Toni had obviously read part of it.
“It’s almost ready,” Toni said. “Have a seat. I’m out of juice, but I’ve got milk if you’d like.”
“Uh, no,” Boggs stammered. “The coffee is just fine. Thank you.”
Toni came in carrying the skillet and scooped eggs onto each plate.
