Pastor Noah had made his way down to see what all of the commotion was about. The crowdâs focus had shifted from the wagon full of dead men, to the two women having an intimate conversation. He had the same raised eyebrow look as everyone else as they all listened closely.

âYour personal life is none of my business,â Ellie said.
âDamn it, Ellie. What if I want it to be?â
âHuh?â Ellie mumbled, unsure what to say.
âI couldâve died out there today, and all I could think about was you. Iâve never been like this with anyone in my life.â Jessie shook her head. âI donât know how to be proper, and I know Iâm not a man, but Iâve seen it your eyes. I know you feel it, too.â
Ellie stared at her, unable to speak.
âMarry me, Ellie Fray.â
âWhat?â she squeaked, inhaling sharply. âWhy on earth would I do that?â
âSo I can kiss you properly and tell you how much I love you,â Jessie said, dropping to one knee and grabbing Ellieâs hand. âTell me you donât feel the same, and Iâll walk away. Iâll even leave town, if you want me to.â
A tear rolled down Ellieâs cheek. She put her hand to her mouth to cover her sob. Seeing the pleading green eyes staring back at her, Ellie couldnât help herself. She dropped to her knees, wrapping Jessie in a tight embrace. Jessie closed her eyes, inhaling the scent of Ellieâs shampoo as she put her arms around Ellie and pressed her face against the side of her head.
Mayor Montgomery cleared his throat loudly. Jessie stood up, pulling Ellie to her feet at the same time. She turned to see the town folk had their eyes glued to them, and swallowed the lump in her throat as she glanced back at Ellie.
âIs that a yes?â she muttered.
âJessie.â Ellie smiled, liking the way if felt to say her name. âIâ¦I donât know. Can we even do that? Get married?â
âI love you,â Jessie said.
âI love you, too,â Ellie whispered. âI really want to kiss you again,â she murmured, almost inaudibly.
Pastor Noah moved closer. âItâs none of my business, but God doesnât care, as long as you love each other. Mayor Montgomery, you know the laws better than I do.â
The mayor chewed his mustache in thought. âIâ¦umâ¦I donât think thereâs anything, you know in the books.â He shrugged. âHell,â he mumbled. âPardon me, Pastor.â
Pastor Noah smiled and nodded.
âIf God says itâs okay, then why not?â the mayor said.
Jessie grinned at Ellie. âWell?â
âYes. Absolutely, yes.â Ellie smiled brightly and wrapped Jessie in a hug.
âDo you think we could get this other matter cleared up, first, though?â The mayor questioned, tipping his hat towards the wagon.
âOh...right.â Jessie laughed.
âI need to get back to my store, anyhow. Iâm so glad youâre okay,â Ellie added, stepping away from Jessie.
âThe show is over folks. This is a law matter. Please go on home and give us some space to work,â the mayor addressed the crowd. âWell, that wentâ¦way off course,â he chuckled, removing his hat to wipe the sweat from his brow.
