Chapter Seven
Bonner walked down the aisle of the barn to check the horses one last time before he headed home. After he grabbed a shower, then he’d go to the main house to get his burger. He was definitely hungry. Breakfast had been around four this morning and he’d skipped lunch. Not having had much help working the ranch, he didn’t have time to stop.
Climbing into his pickup truck, he drove home, let Bodie out then back in, and headed for the shower. Damn, his muscles hurt. Was he getting too old for this shit? Hell, thirty-three was not old but since he hadn’t worked this much in years, it tended to wear him down and made him feel like it was. He’d always stayed in shape by working in the barn and on the horses but doing manual labor, since most of the men were no longer employed on the ranch, made him feel twice his age. Maybe it was time to work with the weights again and start using them. He used to lift weights but he didn’t even have time for that it seemed. His home had two bedrooms and one he used as his weight room. There was probably dust on all of the equipment now.
Reaching in, he turned the shower on then sat on the edge of the tub and toed off his boots, stood and stripped. His stomach growled and he could almost taste that burger Stephanie was bringing him. He should have told her to get fries too. Connie made great hamburgers and she cut her own fries. The woman didn’t cut corners on her food and for that, he and the entire town of Clifton and surrounding towns were thankful. Her husband, Owen, did the cooking but it was Connie’s recipes that kept everyone coming back.
When he stepped into the stall, he sighed as the hot water hit his skin. Picking up the shampoo, he washed his hair then grabbed the soap and washed the rest of him. After rinsing off, he shut off the water, and reached for a towel. After rubbing his head, he dried off then hung the towel up. He’d shave later. He needed to get dressed and head to the main house for his burger. Walking out of the bathroom, he heard Bodie barking so he quickly pulled on his sweatpants, picked up a T-shirt, and pulled it over his head as he walked along the hallway to the kitchen. His jaw went slack when he opened the door and saw Stephanie standing there.
“Hi. I brought your burger and I ordered fries for you too. I warmed it up before I brought it to you,” she said as she held the bag up.
“Thanks. Come on in,” he said as he held the door open. She looked at Bodie and hesitated. Bonner smiled. “He won’t bite. He may be huge but he thinks he’s the size of a Chihuahua.”
Stephanie nodded and stepped in but didn’t take her eyes off the dog.
