08. Everybody Wants You

​After I escape berserker clutches I down my first awake potion and shudder while my body heals up from the sexathon Mitri started.

I take a long shower, basking in the heat and the scent of my own soap. I give myself a long time to stand under the spray and try to get the shaking under control. I dry and go into my bedroom, sliding the book under the mattress like a teen hiding a porno magazine. Then I walk to Ben’s room.

​He has his pillow fortress in full effect. I can’t see him but I can hear him quietly humming to himself.

​“Ben?” I call quietly as I tiptoe closer.

​“Baby?” He sounds startled. I hear something click and a cassette player gets tossed out of the nest along with an old-fashioned pair of over ear headphones.

​“What tape were you listening to?” I pick up the Walkman and pop the cassette out.

​“A mix tape I made.”

​The label on the cassette says ‘Sad Mix’ with a crying face.

​“Why are you sad?” I turn quickly to take him in.

​“You’re naked. I’m not sad,” he looks me up and down with surprise. “Did you walk here like this?”

​I shrug. “Yeah, they’re all asleep.”

​He raises an eyebrow at me. “What did you do baby?”

​“All of you need real rest tonight. Not screwing around in useless dream world crap.”

​“You’re taking away a meal,” he warns with a little smirk.

​“Nah, King has a ton of nightmares. You can eat his and let him rest fully too.”

​“Really,” he looks thoughtful for a second.

​“Aodhan does too,” I whisper sadly. “You’ve met your perfect buffet.”

​His smile drops and his arms open.

​I fall into them gratefully and he lands on his back with me straddling him.

​“I’ve missed you.”

​“Me too,” he whispers back. “I thought you would be with Mitri tonight.”

​“They got their time. This is our time now.”

​“I’m not jealous,” he assures me quickly.

​“I’m glad but I don’t want you to feel left behind,” I brace myself on my elbows and he gives me a sweet smile.

​“You’d never leave me behind. Even when it’s the smart thing to do.”

​I rub my nose against his and smile. He isn’t wrong.

​“I can smell the potion on you. Are you sure you’ll be ok?”

​“I think so. I’ll need your help with it though. Keep me focused and let me know when it’s time to take more before it’s too late?”

​“I’ll smell it wearing off so that isn’t a problem,” he nods thoughtfully. “What else?”

​“Don’t leave me.”

​He takes in my serious expression and frowns. “I won’t. Ever.”

​“Are you my barnacle?” I tease and he nods seriously which makes me laugh.

​“I’ll cling to your tits. Mitri has your ass.”

​I choke in surprise and laugh hysterically.

​“Are you here to tell me goodbye if things go wrong baby?” His eyes begin to leak black ichor as he asks.

​I sit up fully with a frown, suddenly solemn. Am I? That feels like giving up.

​“I want to be near you tonight. Before you fall asleep. I want to talk and cuddle.
