Lunch at the Savoy

“That was lovely, Caroline,” Leslie said.

“Uh-huh.”

“I couldn’t afford this lunch here on my own,” Leslie said. “A real treat.”

She loudly crossed her knife and fork on her plate and glared up at him.

“What’s wrong?” he said. “You’ve been silent through most of the meal.”

“Glad you noticed.”

He reached across to grab her hand but she pulled it away. “Come on, Caroline, we’ve been friends too long,” he pleaded.

“You lied to me, you sod.”

“I did not.”

“Did too. I can tell,” she said. “More secrecy about those Goddamned sketches of Edwards and the accident. Why won’t you let it go?”

“I did. I have. Like I told you I…I had something to finish up at the shop. Old Carstairs—“

“Don’t old Carstairs me.” She reached into her bag and pulled out her wallet, and then dropped some bills on the table.

“No, let me help. I still make a decent wage.”

“Nonsense, with what you make you’re still as poor as a church mouse,” she said. “It was my treat and I’m paying. Besides I can tell you’ve still got a bee or two buzzing about in your bonnet. You’re up to something, dear heart, but no matter.” She reached behind her chair for her coat. “I’m leaving. Had enough of sirens and shelters. Back to the peace of the country for me.”

Leslie flashed her a hurt expression. “Don’t you want to introduce me to that tall, dark Mediterranean at Harrods with such a…. how did you so quaintly put it?”

“Bulge in his nethers,” she said and then seemed to stifle a laugh.

“Hmmm. Well?”

“Oh, bugger off, Les. Cyril’s picking me up at your flat in an hour, and you gave me a key, remember? I’ll slide it under the stair carpet when I leave. Gotta run.”

Then she slipped on her coat, bussed him on the cheek and headed for the front entrance with Leslie trailing after her.

She was hailing a taxi when he caught up to her. “Caroline, please. Don’t be angry with me.”

“You’re a stinker, Les, with a one track mind. You’ve got to accept it, honey. It was an accident. Move on.”

“I can’t,” he said. “Not now. I’m almost there. I can sense it.”

“And after all the fun we had last night.”

“We were bombed out of our minds,” he said.

“You always did have a way with words.” The taxi arrived and she jumped in.

Looking down and shuffling his feet, Leslie tried to look as sheepish as he could.

She rolled down the window, waited a moment then blew him a kiss and waved.

She’s a sucker for my charm.
