Chapter Eight

Finn

The Next Night

The tuxedo-clad waiter serves our after-dinner coffee with quiet efficiency.

That done, he pauses at our candle-lit table and inquires: “Would you like to see the dessert menu? The pastry chef has prepared a very nice selection this evening.”

“Not for me, thank you,” Caroline tells him.

“Thanks, but no.” I hold up a hand. “Just bring the check when you have a moment, please.”

“Very well. Enjoy your coffee,” the man replies, before gliding away silently.

In near unison, Caro and I put two sugars and one long splash of cream into each of our steaming, fragrant cups of brew.

“Thank you again for this,” Caro says as we stir. “I’ve never been to an actual five-star restaurant before. Everything was perfect. Now I know why they rate this place so highly.”

“It’s my pleasure,” I reply truthfully. “As I said, I’ve been here many times, but tonight was a first for me too. The first time I’ve taken the most beautiful woman in the world out for dinner.”

She smiles, but it’s only small and it doesn’t reach her eyes.

Too generic a compliment, maybe?

Trying again, I say, “You turned every head in this place when we came in. You and that perfect little black dress of yours.”

Showing just the tiniest hint of cleavage, while at the same time, highlighting her curves, the dress is demure and classy.

Paired with stiletto heels, delicate dangly earrings and a soft, feminine hair-do, Caroline’s outfit has an almost Princess Grace vibe to it.

So of course, my cock has been up and down like a kid on a teeter-totter throughout the entire meal.

“Oh, this old thing?” Caro smiles, winks, and takes a sip of her coffee. “Thanks.” Licking her lips, she puts the cup back down and then those graceful fingers start nervously playing in her lap again.

As our first “official” date comes to a close, it seems like something’s bothering my beautiful girl.

“Everything okay?” I ask.

Taking the handle of her coffee cup between her fingers, she turns the cup in its saucer nervously before looking back into my eyes.

“I keep thinking I’m dreaming. The last few weeks have been so crazy. It’s been a…whirlwind, but a wonderful one.” Pause. “Like, a dream come true. And…I guess I’m afraid I’m going to wake up.”

“I know the feeling,” I agree. “I hope I never wake up,” I add, smiling into her eyes.

“Finn, I…there’s one other thing that worries me. At first, I thought I’d just wait it out and see what happens. But, I might as well tell you now.”

Oh shit. Now what, I think to myself.

Taking a deep breath, I say, “Okay?”

“This…this attraction we have going on. This…romance. Part of the reason it scares me so much….I mean, it’s not just about my curves, or that I don’t go to the gym. It’s not just about whether working together would cause problems for us, either.”

“Well…what else could there be?” I ask, trying to joke. She tilts her head and gives me a wry smile.

“It’s really stupid…well, irrational of me. I know it is, but I can’t seem to shake it.
