I don’t know my own story. But now I know all his stories. He has many scars on his body. The first time I saw those scars I was scared. When I was less shy, one day I asked his sister. She told me all those details about how he got those injuries. She told me about how he was tortured. A lot of the men have scars like that, on their backs, on their legs, burn marks, beating marks. Some [have] a lump in a bone where it was broken. The women, when their husbands are away, talk about these wounds.

Naseema Bibi’s sister-in-law told me that in 1991, shortly after coming to Azad Kashmir for the first time, Abdul Majid had told his story to the angrez (white foreigners) and had allowed them to photograph the scars on his back. Abdul Majid and I had many long conversations in his hut in the labor colony and sometimes in his taxi when he drove me to my residence. He talked to me about his life in Kashmir before the armed freedom struggle began, about becoming a mujāhid, about his hopes for his new daughter, and about working illegally as a taxi driver in Islamabad. I took a number of pictures of him with his wife, one of which he laminated and hung on the wall. But he never told me about being tortured or about baring his back to have his picture taken.
