It’s the fourth week of November and hockey season is in full swing, which means I haven’t seen Hutch in over a week, and I’m slowly going crazy because of it. I flip-flop between missing him and knowing I shouldn’t, wanting to call him and talking myself out of it. The back and forth is exhausting, and it’s making it hard to concentrate on work.

Which is why for the first time in a really long damn time, I’m hiding at my sister’s clinic.

“If you’re going to be here in my way, at least do something to help,” Rory gripes. She nods toward a broom and dustpan in the corner. “Go take those out there to Casey.”

I go to grab the broom, but I’m blocked from the mission when the door opens and in comes Casey.

“Oh. That’s where I put that.” She grabs them, then breezes back out of the office.

Rory groans, and I laugh.

She glowers at me over her computer. “Why are you here again?”

“Because I’m bored.”

“You’re never bored. You’re running a billion-dollar company—how the hell can you be bored?”

I shrug. “I don’t know. There’s nothing to do. The build in Boston is a month ahead of schedule, and the opening in Tampa was flawless. All my properties are managing themselves. So, I’m just…”

“Bored?”

I huff. “Yep.”

If this surprises Rory, she doesn’t show it. “Have you thought about a vacation instead of lounging around my office?”

I laugh, which scares the little kitten curled up in my lap. I run my fingers over its head, trying to soothe it back to sleep.

“Yeah, right. I never take vacations. There’s always too much to do. I either need to oversee a new build or help manage an emergency. A vacation is out of the question.”

Rory rolls her chair to the right, her piercing green eyes boring directly into me, her full eyebrows lifted high.

“What?” I ask when she doesn’t say anything.

“You just heard yourself, right?”

“Umm…yes? No? I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

She rolls her eyes. “You just said everything was fine and you’re bored. There’s nothing for you to do, so how exactly is a vacation out of the question?”

“Because something could come up. The build could go south in a flash. A pipe could explode in one of the properties. Literally anything could happen.”

“Any of those things could happen any day, either with you cooped up in your office or with your feet kicked up on a beach somewhere. And you know what would happen? Your staff would handle it like they always do.”

I shake my head. “It’s not that easy, Rory. You don’t get it. I—”

“I manage two clinics clear across town from one another. If an emergency comes up at the other one, I don’t put my life on hold here to figure it out. I delegate, which is what you need to learn to do. Or are you too scared to discover that your company doesn’t need you as much as you need it?” She arches a challenging brow, and the urge to run over and shave off the stupid perfectly shaped thing is strong.
