Clearly Seligman is onto something when he talks about accomplishment, too, but his detractors have a point. The cheating example might not quite fit. Nobody likes a cheater. But that’s probably a topic for next year’s summit—surely someone is already at work designing a study to find out whether or not cheaters like themselves. Accomplishment might make us happy, but if we are concerned with morality, too, cheating might leave us feeling more conflicted—perhaps pleased at what we appear to have done and, at the same time, empty and self-loathing because we know we’re liars. If our moral compass points to responsibility to relationship, we’re going to have a pretty hard time if our accomplishments come at the expense of others.

I head back to the hotel, and in the morning I do it all again. I sit through presentations fascinating and dull and add a couple more optimal conditions to my list:
