Twenty minutes later, they left the patio and walked hand in hand back to the tent. The buffet spread was even more sumptuous than the night before. Trey had never tasted brisket so lean it practically melted on his tongue. There was a snap pea salad that called his name for seconds too. Beside him, Farra barely uttered a word until her plate was nearly empty.

While the meal wound down and people wandered back to the bar, Darcy borrowed the mic to thank everyone for coming for the weekend and explain how it helped her and Sean realize the little things they needed to tweak.

“I don’t think they need to fix much as long as the food stays this good,” said Natalie, who’d planted herself beside Trey again after visiting the bar. She nibbled on one of the melon- mint-prosciutto skewers while holding a second one in her other hand. “Would you like one?” she asked, waving it in front of him.

It had become more obvious that Natalie’s intent wasn’t to talk to him about moon gardens or menus. While she might be skirting around her main objective, subtlety wasn’t her body language. She leaned into his shoulder, waiting for his answer.

“No, thank you.”

“Would you like to dance?” Nat asked, frowning as she looked at his chest.

He wondered why she was frowning until he noticed the firefly clinging to his shirt.

“Pesky things.” She brushed it away. “Well?”

Farra made her way across the tent with his and her drinks in hand and slowed when she noticed him talking with Natalie again.

Trey bent over to pick up the firefly where it had fallen near his shoe. He set it on the table, where it lay blinking and flexing its wings.

“What are you doing?” Natalie giggled like it was ridiculous to rescue a crumpled bug.

“Nothing besides waiting for Farra to come back,” he said.

Her frown reappeared. “You two are together, aren’t you?”

“I’d like to think so, yes.”

Natalie pressed her lips together as Farra approached the table. The two of them exchanged a look. Some unspoken communication passed between them because Natalie got up after giving him another disgruntled look and left. Farra didn’t seemed fazed. She set his beer in front of him.

“What happened?” she asked, fingering the blinking firefly. “Poor thing.”

“It was on my shirt.”

Her brows lifted. “So it wanted to hitch a ride. That’s hardly a crime.”

“It wasn’t me.” He lifted his chin toward Natalie’s retreating back.

“I see.” Farra picked it up and held it in her palm. Its antennae waved. “Maybe it’ll recover. I love fireflies.”

“I know that.”

She looked up at him, surprised. “You do?”

“You wore a firefly necklace the night of the wedding.”

Her eyes brightened. “I’m impressed you remember that.”

“I saw it when we were in the gazebo. Do you remember what I said?”

She stared out into the darkness until the realization lit her face. “Maybe?” she said in a faraway voice. Farra rested her chin in her hand, thinking. “Don’t tell me. Let me think.”

He waited for it to come to her, watching her thought process play out across her features.
