Back in our room at La Casa Renaissance hotel, I asked Ava if she knew anything about Rafi and Lolly.

“Nothing at all.”

“I’m going to add that little dramatic scene to our slides,” I said.

“Wait, you think Rafi and my sister are involved in blackmailing my father?” Ava gasped, recoiling away from me. Then she leaned over the table and pointed in my face, “My sister would never do anything to hurt my family!”

I sat back with hands up. “I’m not saying she would. I’m saying there’s a question of what’s going on with her and Rafi. Theo has already proven to be a liar and a cheater. I’m looking at Rafi. It’s just that your sister was the one in the argument with him.”

Ava’s vexation made me leery of bringing up anything Kayden had said about her family possibly having ties to the Dominican Mafia. I wanted to add that piece of information to the slides. Actually, I had thought about looking into links between Meiser’s family and this situation. It was too much of a coincidence. Even though I could easily make a document that Ava didn’t know about, I felt like I was cheating on her. Maybe I was being too paranoid. There was mafia everywhere. But, in less than six months, I had run into two mafia families? Is it a coincidence, or are they somehow connected?

“What did you find out about the bistro?”

I was happy for the change in subject. “I haven’t had a chance to look at the documents yet.”

“You stole the documents?”

“No, I took pictures, and I just uploaded them to a slide,” I said beginning to read through them.

Ava leaned on the chair I was sitting in so she could read over my shoulder.

“What? The Perez family is how Franny and Yoselin financed their restaurant.”

“Why do I recognize that name? Or wait, was that the name Papa mentioned before?” Ava asked scratching her head.

“Kayden mentioned them. Pirates turned Mafia.”

“Yikes, I wonder if they had something to do with the arson?”

“Well, I read the news story about the arson. The timing works out for when the girls started to lose money. I’d assume that would mean they got behind on payments.”

“Why would this information be in a government building?”

“Randy looked white as a ghost when he looked in that file. I wonder if it had to do with seeing the Perez name?”

“Make a note that a higher official could be involved. Doesn’t seem smart to leave this information out unless you aren’t worried about it.”

“Typically, where there is a lot of money and power, crime follows.”

“I wonder if Theo ties into this somehow since he was with Franny?” Ava asked.

“Could be. I’m also going to note that Kayden recommends their restaurant. Is he somehow connected to all of this?”

“Good point. Do you think it’s odd that this is the second time in less than six months we are dealing with a mafia group?” Ava bit her lip.

“Yeah, believe me, I’ve thought of that a few times.
