I played word games on my phone while I waited for Liv and Mike to make up—or, more like, make out on his front porch. While I didn’t really want a front row seat for it, a twinge of jealousy slid through me at what they had together.

Not that I wanted that with anyone in particular—because I didn’t.

When Liv and Mike finally broke apart, she floated on cloud nine back to the car and hopped in with a long sigh. “I just love love, don’t you?”

“I wouldn’t know,” I snorted, sliding my phone back into my purse. “Is everything good between you guys now?”

“Better than good.” She gave a cheery smile and turned out of the driveway of Mike’s two-story brick house. “So . . . tell me the details on this Braiden guy. I know he dropped off the guitar, but what did you guys talk about?”

“Aiden. And there’s not much to tell.”

“What do you mean?”

I watched the blurry shadows of the houses and trees through the window. “We may have had a fight the last time I saw him.”

“A fight? About what?”

“Uh . . .” Dang it. I shouldn’t have said anything about that. My energy level was way too low to go into all that mess right now. “He just said something stupid, and I took it the wrong way. Anyway, he brought the guitar by and said he didn’t want to be the reason why I stopped playing. That’s it.”

“Hmm.” That was Liv’s code for I don’t believe you, but okay. “Yeah . . . I don’t like him.”

“It’s fine. I don’t think I do either most of the time. He can be so annoying.”

We sped around the corner of the Dickey’s Donuts and I thought of when Aiden took me a few weeks ago. An involuntary flutter battered my diaphragm, but I took a deep breath, pushing it down until it disappeared.

A few weeks ago, everything started getting weird, but it still felt normal somehow. Now, nothing felt normal. It was all—as Aiden liked to say—complicated.

Liv jerked the steering wheel, turning into my driveway and I had to latch onto the door to keep from flying out of my seat. “Can I say something?” she asked, bringing us to a stop.

“If I say no, you’ll say it anyway, so go ahead.”

“True. Look, the reason I say I don’t like him is because I didn’t really get good vibes from him. He seems so back and forth. I don’t trust him.”

I leaned my elbow on the door. He had been back and forth, but when I asked him why he acted the way he did, he only said he had a good reason—and it was exhausting.

Even though Lucille had strangely been accurate in her reading and he knew something, it wasn’t going anywhere. Aiden was like a rock I was trying to crack with a little plastic hammer. It would never happen.

Liv sat back in her seat, her hands resting on top of the steering wheel. “You’ll find the right person someday, it’s just not him.
