Comforting Blue
Devland
Two time changes go by before Blue’s tears dry up. Time has come and gone, checking on us, but opting to leave us alone in the 5th room.
Blue is curled up in my lap, her flying fists having lost their momentum long ago.
Through everything, I just held her. Running my hands down her hair and murmuring comforting words, or rubbing soothing circles on her back. Doing anything I can think of to calm her, really.
After countless minutes go by with her completely silent, I lean my head over to see if she’s cried herself to sleep. She’s still very much awake though, her eyes wide and seemingly unseeing. My poor beautiful girl looks so lost and I don’t know what to do to make it better. Feeling completely useless, I press a kiss to the top of her head, which seems to bring her back to me.
She moves in my arms for the first time in, I don’t know how long.
“Dev?” Her voice is scratchy and so incredibly weak.
“Shhh, it’s alright, Blue. I’m right here.” I tighten my arms around her, pulling her into my chest. “We’ll figure everything out.”
Her head jerks up, her eyes nearly popping out of her skull as she looks at me. “We need to go. We’re running out of time.” She tries to push up off of me, but I pull her down.
“Blue, stop. It’s okay—”
“No! Nothing is okay! We need to leave. If we don’t—” Her words cut off with a sob. She shuts her eyes, taking a moment to gain some semblance of composure. When her eyes open, they’re aimed right at me, glistening with tears she refuses to shed. “We’re running out of time.”
“You cannot run out of time here, little one,” Time’s now much deeper voice sounds from behind me. “It simply doesn’t exist.”
“B-but you said…”
I look over to find him standing at seven feet tall in a sky-blue jumpsuit, with a sunny expression on his face. “Time is always of the essence, but here? It does not move as it does everywhere else. I am but one man, with an insurmountable responsibility. If time were to exist here, many places would be lost to it. The only Time here, is me, my dear.”
Bringing my hand up, I curl her wild blue hair behind her ear and cup her jaw, turning her face to mine. “We’ll get ourselves together and go back when we’re ready. We will get you back to the Heart Kingdom, so—”
“You will arrive exactly when and where you need to be,” Time says, interrupting me. I give him a quizzical look over Blue’s shoulder. He shakes his head and mouths, “Now is not the time. All will be revealed when she is ready.”
I figured he would, but this confirms that he does indeed know who she really is. Guilt eats at me, hating that I’ve had to keep this from her. But if Time says to wait, I know it’s the right thing to do.
“I’ll leave you two, it’s almost time for another change.
