Humility

I spoke earlier in this chapter about the ridiculous notion of feeling shame for not having a college degree. This shame likely stems from the feeling that you may be letting others down, e.g., your parents, your siblings, even your high school teachers. Nothing could be further from the truth. What matters most is what YOU want to do, not what others want you to do. Think about it. In this world, you owe it to one person, and one person only—YOU. Let me ask you this: Who but you knows who you are truly meant to be? Blue collar, white collar, whatever. Who but you knows what you are, or what you could really be good at? Who but you knows what passions live within you? Nuff said.

Finally, consider this story. It is a beautiful account of a life now rooted in humility, one of the character traits we have highlighted as essential to living the life you envision for yourself.

It involves a bright young lady I had the pleasure of meeting a few years back. Just for context, let’s quickly define humility. Natalia came in to apply for a position in that new office. The first thing I noticed about her was an almost infectious energy. A tall gal in her early twenties, she exuded confidence, looked you straight in the eye, and gave a firm handshake. She began to tell me her story of what had brought her to our office and her need for a job. After about twenty minutes of the usual interview conversation, she asked me about the job’s hours and how strict I was about them. Unusual question, so I inquired as to what her concern was. It was then that she told me that she had been working for some time as an online brand ambassador. Obviously, I had no idea what that meant. When she explained her role to me, you could see her face just light up. I could quickly tell this was something she was passionate about, something she was meant to do. As I learned more about her successes thus far, and the upward trajectory of her online audience, we changed the subject away from a career in my office, sitting behind a desk, to what she obviously wanted as a career. There was no doubt in my mind, this is what she should be focusing on. And in an unusual twist of fate, we spent the next hour discussing how she would do just that.

Here’s where the humility comes in. I had decided
