âCola, please.â Adam said. âOh, and can I get some crayons?â
âSureâ¦thing.â Lyndsie shook her head slowly as she walked away.
Awkward silence was quickly trumping words.
âSo, do you want to talk about the details of the job?â My eyes flicked down toward the folder on the table.
âNot yet,â Adam replied. âBe patient, blue eyes. I want to order first.â
I drummed my index finger on the table and let out a deep breath. âI asked you to not call me that.â There was no denying itâd be a long evening.
A few minutes later Lyndsie returned with our drinks. âWould yâall like to hear our dinner special?â
âNo,â I said as Adam interjected simultaneously, negating my answer.
âWould you quit prolonging this?â I glared at him.
âCome on. Iâd love to hear about the amazing special this place has to offer.â Adam leaned back and stretched out his arms on either side of him, resting his elbows on the top of the shoulder-high bench cushion, his hands left dangling, relaxed. âWe owe it to Marioâs best waitress here.â
âUmmmâ¦well,â Lyndsie shifted her weight, uncomfortable, âweâve got a seasonal pumpkin pasta with fennel, sausage, and toasted hazelnuts. Itâs pretty rad.â
âThat sounds interesting.â Adam adjusted his posture and folded his hands before flashing me a glance. âNow, what would you say about the mood of the pumpkin when you were in the kitchen?â
âThe mood?â She blinked with confusion.
âYeah, the mood. Does it look trustworthy? Itâs not one of those white, ghost pumpkins that might disappear when youâre least expecting it to, is it?â
âI donât know?â Lyndsie furrowed her brow. âItâs a squash.â
âWould you stop!â I snapped. âYouâre embarrassing me.â
âWhat? I want to make sure I can expect my dinner wonât take off on me. Itâs a valid question.â
It was my breaking point, and Iâd had enough. I wasnât proud of that moment, but I decided to stoop to Adamâs level. Our poor waitress would be the victim. âSpeaking of trust, howâs the lasagna, Lyndsie? Itâs supposed to be a comfort food, right?â
âI guess?â Lyndsie said.
âWould you say itâs consoling?â I narrowed my eyes at Adam. âMaybe even understanding in a horrible situation, even?â
âSo, should I give yâall a few more minutes to look at the menu?â Lyndsie bit her lip, and it was clear she wanted to pass us off to the waiter across the way.
âIâll make this easy. Weâll both have the lasagna. No doubt itâs perfect.â I smiled sweetly and handed her both our menus.
âAnd could I still get those crayons? Maybe a kidâs menu to draw on?â Adam shouted after her as she walked away.
âSheâs gonna spit in our food, you know.â
Adam glared at me. âBy the way, I hate lasagna.â
âGood.â I took a drink of my water and crunched an ice cube. âAre we going to talk about this job yet or what?â I asked. âPretty sure Ty isnât going to be impressed with how youâve treated me so far.â
âHow youâve been treated? If thatâs not the pot calling the kettle black, I donât know what is.
