Chapter 14

The scent of damp earth and decay flooded my senses as we trudged through the darkened woods. Goliath’s hulking frame cast twisted shadows across the gnarled roots and brambles lining the path ahead. Muggs kept pace beside me, his blind eyes darting around, looking for any magic that might be flowing, any Seraphim who might be stalking the woods. Alice brought up the rear, her footsteps light as a cat’s.

We arrived at a clearing where we found a slab. Crumbling concrete stained with age, tufts of wiry grass sprouting up through cracks. A few charred boards and posts lay scattered around what must’ve once been the foundation for an abandoned house.

“Is this the location?” I asked.

“Yes,” Muggs said. “Most of the magic has faded, but there is residue left behind by their spell. It’s dark stuff, Mercy. Nothing to trifle with.”

My breath caught when I spotted a blood-scrawled sigil in the middle of the slab. It looked as though it was painted in a hurry. It wasn’t as precise as the one I’d seen in the Order’s bunker, but its features were identical.

“I’ve seen this before,” I said through a sigh. “Back in the bunker I found a room with an altar. They had this same sigil painted in my blood on the floor.”

“Your blood?” Alice raised an eyebrow.

I nodded. “When I was out, they drew at least a pint or two. I only knew it was mine because when I discovered the sigil there was a ripped-open blood bag there with my name on it.”

Alice pointed at a small folding table knocked over just outside the perimeter of the goat-head sigil. “That looks like it doesn’t belong here.”

I sighed. “Probably a makeshift altar. Whatever ritual they were trying to conduct in the bunker must’ve been interrupted when Goliath burst in to save me.”

“They certainly threw this together in a hurry,” Alice said. “Can you really rush magic like this?”

I shrugged. “I have no idea. Rushing magic isn’t usually advisable. Screw up the slightest thing and the spell won’t work at all, or worse, it’ll do something you never intended. All I know is they used my blood for something.”

Muggs scratched his chin. “I recognize necromancy when I see it, but I lack an understanding of the rituals involved. Human blood is usually involved. Why would they use your blood?”

I pinched my chin. “They tried to blast me with a Seraph’s magic while I was unconscious. Wally, that whackadoodle scientist we tried to abduct before, said that he found my blood intriguing. He was studying it. Maybe my immunity to their magic has something to do with it.”

Muggs shook his head. “More likely, it was an effort to make anyone they raise immune to your magic, Mercy. Most witches aren’t affected by their own spells.”

“Wait,” Alice interrupted. “You’re immune to their magic?”

I shrugged. “Apparently. Beats me why.”

Alice paced around the slab. “I can see why Wallace found it intriguing, at least. When I was using their magic, which I still have I suppose, I hadn’t found any vampire who was immune to it.
