Chapter 10

“Probably not,” Myra said with an oddly cagey look. She quickly cleared her throat and continued walking to urge me forward into the tunnel. “But we can access whatever he might have set aside for us. There’s a whole process. Sorry to disappoint."

I shrugged and tried not to be too bummed about the fact I wouldn’t be seeing Santa. At the very least, I was going to get to see his workshop, and that was cool on its own.

Never meet your heroes. I didn’t think I’d have been able to handle it if Santa was a dick.

Once we were back inside the warmth of the Pole proper, I shrugged off the winter coat and draped it over my shoulder as I followed behind the women. The bag of weapons still hung over my other shoulder, and I’d grown numb to the weight of it already.

I glanced over at the coat, though, and it made me think.

“So how did this work anyway?” I asked and nodded my head toward the coat. “The magic, I mean. Myra, you mentioned that it was Clausian?”

She nodded and fell into line and stepped with me as we trudged up the long tunnel toward the inner village once more.

“It is,” she said. “Or based on Clausian magic at least. It’s a survival trait we have. Have you ever wondered why Santa never gets walked in on doing what he needs to do?”

I furrowed my brow. “I can’t say that I have, but I only just learned he’s real, so you’ll have to excuse my ignorance on that front.”

Myra laughed and lightly bumped into me to nudge my shoulder.

“We don’t go entirely invisible, but we can make a forcefield of magic around ourselves that makes people want to look away. Your eyes don’t want to focus on us. It doesn’t last that long, and if you know what to look for, you can see us, but it’s a useful skill to get out of sticky situations. The Cheer Experts in the workshop managed to harness a small portion of that magic and infuse it into garments, and so long as a Clausian is present, it will work.”

She gestured to herself with a little sweeping gesture.

“She’s being modest,” Clary called over her shoulder. “She was the one who came up with the premise. She might not work in the factory, but she’d be damned good if she did.”

“My skills are better spent here," she said with a shrug, but she wore a bright smile at the compliment.

“That’s how you got away from the jotun,” I said with a dawning realization. “I wondered about that, but I’d never gotten a chance to ask. You were there one second and entirely gone the next. I thought I was going crazy when I couldn’t find you.”

Myra laughed, and the sound was bright and clear as crystal.

“That is how I got away,” she confirmed with a nod.

“I was worried we were leaving you for dead,” I said.

“I told him we weren’t, but I can understand why he’d be worried about something like that,” Clary chuckled.
