Chapter 24: Learning about Steven
âI found some information for you,â Diane said to Dan as he walked up to the circulation desk. âCome on back.â
She gestured for him to follow, and he did so, the two of them entering her office. Diane sat in the chair behind her desk, and he took the one opposite to her. Off to the computerâs right, placed at an angle so he could only partially see it, was a photograph in a black wooden frame. From what he could see, Diane was in a wedding dress, holding the hands of a man whom Dan couldnât discern.
âSo, hereâs what I found out.â Her voice brought his attention back to her, and he felt guilty, having glanced at her wedding portrait. Diane hadnât noticed, and relief coursed through him. âSteven Deschenes, age ten, was killed in 1952. His father claimed it was an accident, that a hatchet had tumbled off the shelf in the shed when the two of them went out to cut wood.â
âClaimed?â
Diane nodded, shifting her focus from the computer to him. She smiled wanly. âTurns out the boyâs father didnât go in and call the police. Or anyone. Instead, he dragged his sonâs body through the woods behind a couple of neighboring houses and then dumped the body there. He covered him with leaves and branches.â
âWhy?â Dan shook his head, confused and sickened.
âThe police asked the same question. He told them he was drunk, and he panicked.â
âWhat happened to the father?â
âJustice, I suppose.â
Dan looked at her with a raised eyebrow.
Diane sighed. âHe was arrested, charged with first-degree murder, and tried. They convicted him of negligent homicide and sent him to the state prison in Concord.â
âHow much time did he spend in prison?â
âHe was supposed to do ten years.â
Dan winced. âHow much did he actually do?â
âThree months.â
âWhat!â
Diane held up a hand, and the smile on her face was grim and terrible. âSomeone beat him to death in his cell.â
âDo they know who?â
She shook her head. âThey suspect it was a pair of the guards. Stevenâs maternal grandfather was a police lieutenant in Manchester.â
âWow.â Dan couldnât think of anything else to say. âI mean, wow. I didnât know that. Thank you.â
âYouâre welcome, Dan.â She smiled. âI was going to come by last night, but I got caught up with some work, and I didnât want to scare you by pulling into the cemetery after ten.â
âYou were here that late?â
She nodded. âYes. We were having issues with the heating system. Really donât want to accidentally poison everyone with carbon monoxide.â
âNo, definitely not.â Dan chuckled and smiled at her. âBig plans for today?â
âNot yet. Have any ideas?â she asked.
âLunch? Somewhere inside? Itâs a little chilly out there today.â
âI like it when itâs chilly.â
He looked at her, surprised. âYou do?â
âI do. It lets me sit closer to you.â She winked, and Dan felt himself blush. Diane laughed playfully. âDan Tate, you are the sweetest man there is. Lunch in the park?â
âLunch in the park,â he agreed. âThank you again, Diane.
