Fire kills most things. That’s what Hil taught us.

The words of Dr. Miracle in Mathis echoed in Lyric’s mind. How does one kill something that has not been recorded as existing in over a millennium? Could it even be killed?

She stood by the open doorway and watched as the deputy, his name was Chuy, picked up a bucket of linseed oil and walked toward the cages. Several local carpenters had stored their finishing products in the warehouse. Among them was a barrel of oil. What would have been used to bring beauty to a masterpiece now would end a menace.

“Chuy, it doesn’t have to be you,” Stone interjected.

The burly deputy simply shook his head as he stepped up to the cage that held Javi. Tears stained Chuy’s face as he stared at the creature that was once been his husband.

“He’s the only thing I cared about in this world,” Chuy replied. The creature opposite him stared blankly back. Its lips pulled back into a tooth-filled snarl. Chuy set his jaw. “You don’t deserve to wear his skin!” He grabbed the bottom edge of the bucket and hurled the contents onto the creature. It wailed and howled and hissed in response.

“No!” Lyric gasped. She moved to step forward. Jalin’s iron grasp wrapped around her arm and held her in place. She whipped her head around to glare at him. He simply shook his head in response and then released her.

“It has to be done.”

Chuy reached into his pocket and pulled out a box of wooden matches. Stepping away from the fumes, he struck a match and tossed it forward. “Goodbye.”

The match flew forward, igniting the volatile substance almost instantly. The fire raced and engulfed the creature in a wreath of whitish-yellow flames. An inhuman scream erupted from it as it surged toward the bars and slammed into them. The other three creatures joined the howls and echoed the same ear-piercing death wail. The sound was deafening.

Chuy and Stone clasped their hands over their ears and collapsed on the ground, writhing in pain. The windows cracked.

Lyric’s head felt like it was on fire. The sound from the creatures burned in her ears and on her skin. Her vision swam.

“Jalin!” she called and grabbed at the Inquisitor, who wrapped his hands around her to hold her up.

“Boyorquez!” he shouted.

Nodding her head, the Voca forced herself to stand and walk toward the creatures. Stone and Chuy writhed on the floor, holding their hands over their ears. The windows continued to crack. One by one, they shattered. Broken glass raining down inside the warehouse.

A shockwave of pain slammed into Esperanza. She wrapped her hand around Hil’s sigil and called on the God’s protection. Raising her arms above her head, power coalesced into a large sphere of golden-reddish light. It surrounded her like a golden shield.

“Hil who brings light to the world,” The Voca intoned, summoning the power of her God into her body, “Cleanse these bodies of their corruption. Voluntad de Dios!”

With a single motion, she threw her arms wide and four beams of energy surged out from the sphere, striking each creature.
