CHAPTER FIVE

Jory looked up from the newspaper he was reading when he heard the study door open. Seeing Isaac, he quickly glanced back down and tried to pretend that he was immersed in the news. He wasn’t.

Every sense he had was focused on the gorgeous man walking across the room toward him. He could hear Isaac’s footsteps, the way the pant legs of his slacks brushed together as he walked. He could hear the man breathing.

Jory had been doing his level best to avoid Isaac for the last two weeks. He’d even taken to being awake during the day and sleeping at night. It made him ache with desire--and regret--every time he was in the same room with the man, like now.

“Jory, can I--”

Jory reached over and grabbed a sealed jar of blood he had the doctor draw from his arm earlier in the morning and set it down on the table before Isaac. “There’s your breakfast.” Jory held up his arm showing off the bandage on his wrist. “Freshly squeezed.”

Isaac pulled his hand down his face, some of the color draining away. “Jeez, Jory, could we just--”

Ah, saved by the bell, or the butler as it were. Isaac pressed his lips tightly together when the there was a light knock at the door and then it opened and Manning, the butler, walked in.

“Master Jordan, you ride has arrived.”

“Thank you, Manning, I’ll be right there,” Jory said as he climbed to his feet and carefully folded up the newspaper. He set it down on the side table and then tapped the lid of the jar of blood. “Don’t forget to eat. You’re looking a little peaked.”

“What ride?” Isaac snapped. “Where are you going?”

“Out.”

“Out where?”

Jory shook his head as he started to follow Manning to the door.

“Jory, damn it, where are you going?”

Jory swung around and pointed his finger at Isaac. “I do not answer to you.”

Isaac looked like he wanted to argue but then his face paled a little and he shoved his hands into his pockets. “No, of course not. I didn’t mean to imply that you did. I just thought we might spend some time getting to know each other better.”

“Why?”

“I just…” Isaac shrugged.

“You’ve made your feelings more than clear two weeks ago, Isaac. I don’t believe we have any reason to be in each other’s company any longer than necessary.”

The words hurt to say but Jory knew they were true. He refused to be in a relationship where he was always the submissive one. He’d been there and done that and he didn’t like it much. He much preferred equal ground in his relationships.

He understood that he had to stick around, that Isaac’s life depended on drinking his blood, but that didn’t mean they had to be lovers too. They didn’t even have to be friends.

Isaac’s fists clenched at his sides, a measure of how upset he was. “If it’s so damn important that you fuck me in the ass, Jory, then just do it.”

“Isaac, this isn’t about me fucking you in the ass.
