Chapter Forty-Two

Coughs wracked Caia’s lungs. Pain seared her throat, and a small dribble of wetness under bandages told her that the wound had opened.

Caia blinked through bleary vision to see that she was on the shore of the Lake of Reflections, once more under the eternally black sky of the ever-life.

It was all she understood before the screaming started.

“You bitch!”

A mess of tangling limbs and weapons was some feet from her on the ground.

Caia stumbled to her feet. Astraea straddled her sister, and when Lavine kicked both their weapons into the lake soundlessly, the girl’s hands were on her throat. Some distance away was Lavine’s mask and cloak.

Astraea must have ripped the mask from her face after realizing who Lavine was.

“Stop this!” Caia’s eyes scoured the area for a weapon, anything to use against Astraea.

Lavine’s fingers flew to her own throat, her face already too ashen for Caia to believe that Astraea couldn’t choke her in a matter of minutes.

Caia didn’t have to think. Her hand flicked to her chest, and she pulled the weapon out of herself as she felt the magic will it into existence from a piece of her soul. Her blade of bone sang as it sliced through the air at her side. Panting, Caia ran to put a stop to the horror before her.

Astraea’s chest heaved, and after glancing up at Caia, her fingers around Lavine’s throat relaxed. Something between an inhale and a rasp shattered the uncomfortable silence.

At least she’s breathing again.

Astraea hadn’t moved from where she held down Lavine. Her eyes were hard as she stared down at her. “You’re going to wish you were dead when I’m done with you.”

Astraea’s jaw was flicking with malice when her gaze returned to Caia. “I should have known when you pulled that out against the elk. I should have known who you both were with your cursed, rotting magic.”

Caia’s teeth came together at her words. “Let her go or else.”

Caia suppressed the urge to jump when Astraea started laughing.

But the girl didn’t move from her position. Lavine’s face was returning to its normal color, though it was far too sickly for Caia’s comfort. And Caia wasn’t convinced that Astraea didn’t have a knife hidden on her somewhere.

“I know you’re subject to the same rules in this place as we are,” Caia said, her sword still pointed at Astraea. “You can bleed. You’re going to release her, slowly.”

Astraea stopped laughing so fast that it must have hurt her throat. “The sisters of death. Why don’t you kill me like she didn’t have the guts to?”

Blood pounded Caia’s temples. This girl was the key to many things.

Astraea’s safe return to the living world would save her sister’s life. She could spare Lavine from the executioner’s blade.

And her presence would restore Procyon’s fractured family.

Astraea Wolvein.

Caia wondered how much Procyon had told his sister about everything. If she knew he was king. That they were both Arcturus’s progeny.

Something hollowed out inside Caia. This girl had been a victim of so many wrongs.
