Chapter Forty-Four
The instinct is to back away, get as far as you can from the blazing pain. It hurt, but I knew it was going to hurt a lot more in a few minutes. Besides, why worry about the blade stuck in your guts when the man holding it is intent on stabbing it repeatedly in and out of you?
I pressed forward, pressing my bulk against the man with the knife. He was tall, but not Tom Greer tall. He tried to extract the blade and plunge it in again.
No deal, pal.
One of a special operator’s greatest strengths is to push past discomfort, push past pain, push past agony. You learn it from your first day at Coronado, Bragg, or Camp Lejeune. Pain hurts, but not as much as death.
We crashed into the sink behind my attacker, scattering mouthwash bottles and spray deodorant.
“They’re gonna make you pay for that, you know,” I said, amazed by the pain in my gut.
I got him in a full-fledged face grab and shoved. The back of his head pounded into the mirror, cracking it right down the middle. I could see my face was a healthy red, no cause for alarm yet.
The guy tried to bite my finger. I let go with my hand and kept moving forward with my elbow, crushing him against that wall. He tried to dig the knife deeper, but I had my once-free hand locked on his knife wrist. The tug of the bloody blade war was on.
I know what you’re thinking. Use the gun you picked up, Tom. Flick that Spyderco blade you purloined and stab the guy in the eye.
Not so easy, friend. My hands were full, remember?
So, what do you do when your hands are full, and the man you’re fighting has a pointy thing stuck in your abs and happens to be matching you—strength for strength?
You use your head, of course.
I have to tell you; it hurts to headbutt a man on the top of the head. I was going to go for broke when Mr. Knifehand turned and looked up at me. Thank you, Mr. Knifehand.
My God-made battering ram hit him first in the left eye, and then moved left when he flinched, and I got him in the nose. That rang the bell. The blood flowed like threats from a drunken man. I know his eyes blurred because he tried to shake his head. I say tried because it looked more like a pathetic head wriggle—a head wriggle I bludgeoned into submission.
Smack. Smack. Crack.
The final headbutt took him out good, and he went limp in my grasp. Too bad he was still holding the blade. I pried it from his hand carefully, still pinning him to the wall.
One, two...
The blade came out and was followed by a steady stream of my lifeblood.
I let the unconscious body slip to the floor and grabbed a pearly white towel from the sink, pressing it against my wound.
I turned back to the shower. Henry’s mouth was half-open. I really thought he was dead.
