CHAPTER NINETEEN

The sun was almost waning when I got through most of the info in that book on Unseelie mages. Honestly, it was an okay read, the author kept making it clear they had little information on the topic, but it was nice to read something about magic. One exciting chapter was on the possibility of Unseelie mages summoning low-level souls trapped in purgatory and binding them to dead things to use as familiars.

How morbid, so morbid I wanted to see if I could do it.

“What the hell are you doing?” Verity must have been worried about me when she caught me scouring the outside for something dead. It didn’t take long for her to give up and smoke inside the barn.

Lucky for me, I found a poor raccoon who had a duel with a car and lost.

I followed the design of the summoning circle as much as I could in the dirt and then used an old box to contain it. I had no idea what I was doing, but the book said it needed to be contained inside a space with walls with containment glyphs written on the sides to keep the soul from escaping.

I did everything the book suggested.

I failed, by the way. I failed spectacularly.

In one final attempt, as the sun was waning, I decided to forgo using the summoning circle used in the book and instead copy the marking on my chest. I used a stick, recreated the design in the dirt, and sat the smelly dead creature on top before repeating the chant in the book to call a soul to me.

When I thought nothing had happened, I heard a slight scratching sound inside the box. “Oh crap!” I exclaimed and lifted the box. The creature charged at me, still smelling rotten with its maggot-infested flesh. Its eyeball had been squashed by the car. Its insides spilled from its chest, and nether region like someone had only squeezed the center of a tube of toothpaste. The remaining eye blazed like fire as the creature’s claws scratched at me.

It dragged its broken body away like a person trying to escape a killer in a horror vid until a thick boot squashed its head, causing the thing to fall still. The light in its one eye had dimmed until that, too, was touching the desert ground.

“It’s time to head out.” Varick dragged his messy boot along the pavement.

“You killed it!”

“You shouldn’t be toying with stuff like this without help.” He scolded.

“I was just practicing.” I scoffed.

“There’s nothing wrong with practicing. But the lessons in this book skip over important information, like the need to protect yourself from possession. The souls you’ll be able to summon are people desperate to escape purgatory. They’ll do anything to live again, so which body is more appetizing? A living fae or some half-squashed animal?”

“The book says the possession is temporary. It never lasts long.”

“With the summoning circle in the book. What you used was something a little more unpredictable.”

“Yes, far for unpredictable indeed, fae child.
