Chapter 20

EVE

Blood red was not my colour.

I stared at the material of the dress poking out of the paper bag on the leather seat beside me. Alice had picked it out for me, and while I appreciated that my wardrobe could do with a dash of colour that wasn’t black, white, or some shade of grey, I wasn’t sure that kind of dress was for me. But she’d sworn blind I looked amazing, and when Craig had turned up because I was late to meet him, he’d agreed, and they’d brought it to the cashier before I’d had the chance to squeeze back into my skinny jeans. I’d made it out just in time to pay myself.

Luke had offered to pay for whatever outfit I needed for Dylan’s birthday, but I’d flat out refused to let him. I think my refusal wounded his ego a bit. Not in a narcissistic way, he shared his father’s generosity and wanted to take care of people. But this was the first purchase with money from my new job at The Dark Night, and I liked the autonomy. I hadn’t noticed how much Ryan had been controlling what I wore under the guise of ‘gifts’. But that was the past, and this was my present.

“Eve?” Alice broke my little spiral, her chin propped on her hand as she gave me a knowing look. “Where did you go?”

“Somewhere I shouldn’t have.” I unfurled the napkin I’d bunched in my hand.

Craig arched an eyebrow at me in question but didn’t push it.

Nor did Alice. Instead, she stuffed a French fry in my mouth with that bubbly laugh of hers ringing. “Good, now finish up because if I’m home late Mam and Luke will send out a search party.”

Craig chuckled. This was the girl who was barely able to speak after she came home. Her knee still bounced under the table, and her eyes widened at any bang. She had been on edge all day, but she hadn’t bolted. Not even when we made our way through the busy streets, brimming with weekend shoppers taking advantage of the early December sales.

“It’s a joke.” A genuine smile lit up her pixie-like features as she nudged me with her elbow. “You’re allowed to laugh.”

I swallowed down my shock and returned the smile. It was good to see her like this. Therapy was doing Alice a world of good.

Craig launched into an embarrassing story about me at college, something about me, Kate, and the reason I don’t drink tequila anymore. I’d been worried Alice would be nervous around him, but he had an infectious personality. He was both a positive ray of sunshine and a ball of sour sarcasm all rolled into the perfect friend.

“It was a costume party band, and we had gone as the ghostbusters. Eve had been knocking back these cocktails all night, her tongue was bright green. But then her face was green to match, and I got there just in time for her to projectile vomit all over me.
