My wolf was losing his damn mind. The minute she turned down the job, a panic set in, gnawing at me. I thought for a moment I might pass out from the actual physical pain I was experiencing. She didn’t answer. So I asked again. “Now what, Autumn?”

She tossed her auburn ponytail over her shoulder and assessed me with those gorgeous emerald eyes of hers. They stabbed me right through the heart, forcing me to lean against the back of the couch for support. “Now I go back to the kitchen and do everything I can to make your evening worry-free. Later, if you’re interested, we’ll meet up.” Autumn watched me for a reaction.

Slowly, I nodded. “Sounds fair. I’ll see you later tonight.”

“You understand, right? Why I can’t just drop everything and move here? I have a life.” Her eyes pleaded for understanding, but I was hurting too much to offer her the comfort she wanted.

“Sir Purr isn’t a life.” I quickly looked away, hoping she wouldn’t pick up on my error.

Her head tilted. I watched as she slowly licked her lips, and I knew she was mentally scanning every conversation we’d ever had for mention of her cat. I simply stared at her trying not to look guilty. Maybe it worked enough. Her shoulders drooped in defeat.

“I’d walk you back to the kitchen, but I have to get a few things done in her before the service.” I blew out a breath. “I’ll come find you after.”

She shook her head. “I’ll come find you.”

Slowly, I nodded, worried she might not look for me at all. I wanted to ask, but I couldn’t. The Alpha is never weak. He’s decisive. He’s controlled. Only every time I was around Autumn, I was none of those things. I was a schoolboy. I was silly and awkward. I said the wrong things. I didn’t know how to act because if I did what I wanted to do, followed my instincts, she’d run. She wouldn’t understand the pull of the true mate until she changed.

I watched her walk away. She didn’t shut the door behind her, so I could see her progress, feel every bit of the distance. I stood and returned to the master bedroom. There was only one way to appease my wolf at the moment. I slipped off my shoes and pulled off every bit of my clothing. I folded it neatly and piled it on the bed. Then I wandered over to the patio doors and pulled them wide. Inhaling deeply, I howled at the setting sun as I shifted into wolf form. Tonight, I needed to feel the wind rustling through my fur and the stones scraping on the pads of my feet. I needed to go as far as I possibly could to rid myself of these emotions.

With little care for the time or who might be watching, I exited the building at a jog, ready to bolt for the woods. I’d made it all of ten feet when a scent tickled my nose.
