Chapter Sixteen
Frankie
When Jasque looked like he had quenched his thirst and settled a little, I asked him to tell me all that had happened that fateful night two hundred years ago in the catacombs of Paris.
My shrunken old lover looked at me and sighed.
âVery well,â he said, âbut first, the most important thing. These men are good men.â He cast his eyes over Flynn, Dray, Ry and Nik. âYou can, and should, trust them. I have watched them over the time they have lived here, and I approve.â
Jasque stood and tottered over to Nik placing his gnarled old hand on his head, flattening his spiky red/blond hair. âThis one is shy, my love. But bright. Be gentle with him.â
âThis one is happy-go-lucky and very resilient. You will have fun and happy times with him; he will never be cross with you,â he said, going over to Ry and placing his hand on his tightly curled black hair.
Next was Flynn. Jasque placed his hand on his brown hair and said, âThis one is the most intense; he may be the only one able to control you. You need that, mon cher. Listen to himâhe speaks wisely.â
And lastly, Jasque placed his hand on Drayâs impossibly black hair. âAh, this one,â Jasque began, âhe longs to be one of us, longs for the night to claim him.â
Jasque smiled and looked at me. âHe is like us in more ways than you know.â
Jasque finally sat, a little tired.
I felt like he had been blessing them, giving them permission to step in and take his, Peire, Viktor and Sansonâs place as my lovers, my protectors, my subjects.
I didnât need his permission, of course, but maybe they did.
Jasque began again.
âWhere to start? I suppose that dreadful night. Although it was two hundred years ago, I remember it with clarity. It is burned into my memory.â
The room fell silent, even though it was quiet before. It was as if time itself had stopped ticking so it could listen to Jasqueâs tale.
âWe had willingly gone to the catacombs that night as Karl had requested of us. But Françoise, my love, you began taunting him, laughing and saying, âHa! No one gets changed that old. You were a mistake! A balding, fat vampire! And you can never changeâyou will look like that for all eternity!ââ
âYou remember that word for word?â I gasped.
âI told you, my love, it is burned into my memory.â
I pitied Jasque. What horrors had he been through in the past two hundred years while I lay peacefully in the soil?
I nodded. âPlease, continue.â
Jasque bowed and continued, âYou stood up, my Queen, and looked down at him, for you were taller than the small man. âYou are jealous of our beauty and skillsâ, you shouted at him. But it was too late. And I know now that whatever you had said or done that night, he was going to slaughter us anyway. So, I am pleased you gave him a piece of your mind. You made him look weak and foolish in front of his followers, and he did not like that.
