Chapter Fourteen

When his lessons with Professor Montague were done for the day, Tom went home to the London flat to grab a few things from his room and see his mom. They had agreed he should stay at Harding for the weekend, to get settled and to hang out with his new friends.

He hadn’t mentioned that he was heading to Lola’s instead of back to Harding, and she hadn’t asked. She was busy making plans to see her London friends, finally. Apparently, though the Council of Earthly Magical Beings had not yet apprehended The Master, they had identified a few of his minions and were now in the process of infiltrating his ranks. They were hopeful this would yield information about The Master’s plans and the whereabouts of his lair.

Meanwhile, Arabella had been assigned a magical bodyguard. So long as she took them along, she was now free to resume her daily activities. One had been assigned to Tabitha as well.

“Don’t I get one?” asked Tom, only half-joking.

“You are under constant supervision at school. I should think the staff at Harding will keep you as safe as you were at The Academy,” she replied, adding the final touches to her make-up.

“I’m happy for you and Tabitha,” he replied and kissed his mother’s cheek before heading out.

“Tom?” She turned and gave him a once over. “Why are you wearing a dress shirt and cologne?”

Blast! She’d been so engrossed with herself, Tom thought she hadn’t noticed.

“We dress for dinner at Harding Academy,” he lied smoothly.

“I’m assuming you’ll be wearing the school tie?” she asked eyeing his jeans and sneakers. Tom looked down at himself and replied, “My dress pants, shoes, tie, and robes are at school.”

She nodded and merely said, “Well, have fun. Call me on Wednesday for an update.”

“Yes, Mam,” Tom said and left the room.
