Fifteen minutes later, Zahra looked from Blaire, to Callum, to Knox, then back to Blaire. âYouâre serious.â
âTotally serious,â Blaire said. âTheyâre both baâvonn-shees, as are all of their brothers, as will be our child.â
Zahra stared at Blaire for a long second, then she burst out laughing. She couldnât help it.
âScottish vampires?â she asked, summarizing the craziest speech sheâd ever heard. Maybe the pregnancy hormones had affected Blaireâs brain, except neither Callum nor Knox had ever stopped to amend any of her bizarre statements.
âBaâvonn-shees,â Blaire corrected her. âTheyâre fae. Not vampires. Not exactly anyway.â
âCallum,â Zahra pleaded with no small amount of exasperation, âyou expect me to believe this?â
He leaned back in his chair. âYouâre scientifically minded. I assumed youâd want some proof.â
âIf you think youâre going to bite meâ¦â
Sheâd started off glib but her question dissipated when she saw the flash of hunger in Callumâs eyes and heard him groan as if in physical pain. He wasnât joking. He was fucking serious.
Knox chuckled, and Zahra twisted in her chair to glare at him.
âWould this be enough scientific proof for you?â Knox asked, then he vanished right before her eyes. Poof. Gone.
Zahra blinked. âWhat theâ?â She turned toward Blaire. âWhere did he go?â
Blaire smiled and made a hitch-hiking gesture with her thumb pointed toward the wall behind them.
Zahra whirled in her chair to find herself facing Knoxâs midriff. She looked up his tall frame to his bald head. âHowâ?â
âItâs called tilting,â Blaire explained. Which really explained nothing as far as Zahra was concerned. âHe tilted.â
Then, poof. Gone again. This time he reappeared behind Callumâs chair.
Oh my god. Tiny beads of sweat prickled along the nape of Zahraâs neck. She couldnât wrap her brain around what was happening.
Callum looked up from his desk to meet her eyes.
âCan you do that?â she asked, her mouth dry. âTilt?â
Callum just stared at her without answering. He looked completely exhausted.
âIâve got a class to get to.â Zahra rose from her seat and took three steps for the door when Callum was suddenly standing right in front of her.
She stifled a scream so it came out like âMeeeep!â
He held her astonished eyes, as if waiting for her to freak out. It was coming. She could promise him that. And it suddenly made sense how heâd darted across the patio so fast when Sofia had nearly caught them. And how heâd disappeared from her bedroomâ¦
But then something else occurred to her, something that caused her skin to prickle with a new kind of awareness. Blaire and Knox were here for a reason. âWhy did you ask them to come here, instead of telling me all of this yourself?â
âBecause if this doesnât go well,â Callum said, directing her back to her chair, âI didnât want to have to be the one to fix it.â
âToâ¦fix it?â she asked. âAm I the âitâ that might need fixing?â
âYes,â Knox said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
Callum didnât say anything, just watched her face intently. Zahraâs body was screaming
