Fifteen minutes later, Zahra looked from Blaire, to Callum, to Knox, then back to Blaire. “You’re serious.”

“Totally serious,” Blaire said. “They’re both ba’vonn-shees, as are all of their brothers, as will be our child.”

Zahra stared at Blaire for a long second, then she burst out laughing. She couldn’t help it.

“Scottish vampires?” she asked, summarizing the craziest speech she’d ever heard. Maybe the pregnancy hormones had affected Blaire’s brain, except neither Callum nor Knox had ever stopped to amend any of her bizarre statements.

“Ba’vonn-shees,” Blaire corrected her. “They’re fae. Not vampires. Not exactly anyway.”

“Callum,” Zahra pleaded with no small amount of exasperation, “you expect me to believe this?”

He leaned back in his chair. “You’re scientifically minded. I assumed you’d want some proof.”

“If you think you’re going to bite me…”

She’d started off glib but her question dissipated when she saw the flash of hunger in Callum’s eyes and heard him groan as if in physical pain. He wasn’t joking. He was fucking serious.

Knox chuckled, and Zahra twisted in her chair to glare at him.

“Would this be enough scientific proof for you?” Knox asked, then he vanished right before her eyes. Poof. Gone.

Zahra blinked. “What the—?” She turned toward Blaire. “Where did he go?”

Blaire smiled and made a hitch-hiking gesture with her thumb pointed toward the wall behind them.

Zahra whirled in her chair to find herself facing Knox’s midriff. She looked up his tall frame to his bald head. “How—?”

“It’s called tilting,” Blaire explained. Which really explained nothing as far as Zahra was concerned. “He tilted.”

Then, poof. Gone again. This time he reappeared behind Callum’s chair.

Oh my god. Tiny beads of sweat prickled along the nape of Zahra’s neck. She couldn’t wrap her brain around what was happening.

Callum looked up from his desk to meet her eyes.

“Can you do that?” she asked, her mouth dry. “Tilt?”

Callum just stared at her without answering. He looked completely exhausted.

“I’ve got a class to get to.” Zahra rose from her seat and took three steps for the door when Callum was suddenly standing right in front of her.

She stifled a scream so it came out like “Meeeep!”

He held her astonished eyes, as if waiting for her to freak out. It was coming. She could promise him that. And it suddenly made sense how he’d darted across the patio so fast when Sofia had nearly caught them. And how he’d disappeared from her bedroom…

But then something else occurred to her, something that caused her skin to prickle with a new kind of awareness. Blaire and Knox were here for a reason. “Why did you ask them to come here, instead of telling me all of this yourself?”

“Because if this doesn’t go well,” Callum said, directing her back to her chair, “I didn’t want to have to be the one to fix it.”

“To…fix it?” she asked. “Am I the ‘it’ that might need fixing?”

“Yes,” Knox said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

Callum didn’t say anything, just watched her face intently. Zahra’s body was screaming
