The Cemetery Battle

November 4th

We left The Vault and headed directly for the cemetery marked on the map left for us by Grandfather Ellsworth. As we drove, my stomach tied itself in knots. We faced a serious confrontation, and I feared my ignorance about magic would be a problem. The idea of Gruberman and his minions scared me to death, almost as much as using my Reliquest powers.

Dad broke the apprehensive silence in Grandpa’s Charger, "Can you tell me anything else about Gruberman?"

"He's extremely arrogant," Grandpa said. "He will command his minions to attack us, so we really need to take them out first. Difficult to tell what artifacts he may have at his disposal, but he will attempt to flee at the first sign he's in any real danger."

"Maybe we should stake out this cemetery before we go in," I said. "If we find any escape routes, we can account for that."

"Good idea," Dad said.

We turned onto a street along one side of the cemetery. Two of the other sides backed against forest. From our scouting, there was no exit available other than the front gate, unless you wanted to go over the tall wrought-iron fence.

As we approached the main entrance gate to Greenlawn Cemetery, Grandpa turned the corner and slowed. "If Ms. Schmidt is with him, she'll be a weakness, but we have to be mindful he has Helena. Near the end of the war, we captured him fleeing Treblinka in Poland. We were working with the Russian army. They closed in and found Gruberman busy packing up his laboratory outside the kill center in the Treblinka II concentration camp. We had the Russian army who took out his minions and flushed Gruberman right into our trap. I don't think we can pull that off here."

We parked at the end of the block away from the front gate to the cemetery. "At least we have the element of surprise," Dad said. "I think we need to infiltrate this place, scope things out, assess, and then make a quick plan of attack." Dad peeked at his watch. “A few minutes past noon. We should be good, though I don’t understand what difference the time makes.”

Grandpa leaned against the car. “Ellsworth probably conducted research to determine Gruberman’s weaknesses. I can tell you in our encounters we found his minions to be weaker during daylight hours than they were at night for some unexplained reason.”

I nodded. “Any advantage we can get is a good thing.”

Dad left the mirror and his bag of tricks in the trunk of the Charger. We entered Greenlawn Cemetery through the front gate, trying to look like we weren’t up to something. After all, it was now just after noon. There was nothing out of the ordinary about three people visiting a graveyard in broad daylight.

Greenlawn was plotted out in a spoke pattern. From the entry gate, a paved road ran straight to the center of the cemetery where the large mausoleum was located. Pavement winding around the circumference inside the fence formed the perimeter.
