Apollo nearly shook with frustration as he approached Jack. âWe need to talk,â he barked.
Jack glanced at the mountain of flesh shaking at his side and nodded. âOkay, buddy. Give me a second while Iââ
âI need to talk to you now,â Apollo muttered through clenched teeth.
Jack put away the topographical maps he was going over and closed the folder. âOkay. Letâs talk.â He pulled Apollo to the side. âWhatâs going on?â
âItâs Maria, man. She ainât having nothing to do with me now. I tried to hook up with her a little bit ago and all she wants to do is practice her sword shit with the Padre.â
Jack looked at him expectantly. âIs that it?â Jack shrugged. âThatâs what has your shorts in a twist?â
Apollo stared at him wide eyed. âAinât that enough? Man, I ainât had time to spend more than five minutes with her in over a week and now that we do, sheâd rather knock swords with Hank than spend time with meâ¦and you think itâs no big deal?â
Jack smiled and shook his head. âBuddy, you need to take a chill pill and learn to relax. Go take a cold shower or somethingâ¦â
âMan, I thought you would understand!â Apollo exclaimed.
âUnderstand what?â Jack shrugged. âYou caught her in the middle of her exercise routine and you expect her to drop everything because you have five minutes to spare?â He looked at Apollo expectantly. âAnd now you get all antsy and pissed because she doesnât drop what sheâs doing, throw her clothes to the floor and jump your big ugly ass in front of God and everybody for a quickie before you run back out the door?â
Apollo stared at Jack with a blank expression on his face, the tic in his jaw gone.
âSo am I reading you right?â Jack asked.
âWellâ¦Iâ¦â
âWell?â He raised his brows at him. âDid you or did you not just get all pissed off because your girl didnât drop everything for a quickie because you found five minutes in your busy schedule?â
Apolloâs face flushed as he realized he was being a jerk. âMan, I didnât think about it that way.â
âNo, I donât think you did,â Jack said. âWhat if it was the other way around? What if she had found five minutes in her schedule and you were busy with something? Maybe you were in a meeting with the colonel? Would you tell Mitchell to piss off because you had to go service your girl?â
âWell, come on now, she was just practicing swords andâ¦â
âAnd that is important to her!â Jack emphasized each word, hoping it would sink into Apolloâs thick skull. âBuddy, you know I love you, but you have to understand something. She was scared to death on that hilltop. Her first real mission in the muck and she almost bought it. She ran out of ammo up there, and it was the Padre and the rest of the crew that came to her rescue. She saw what he could do with a blade and realizedâ¦blades donât run out of bullets in the thick of it.
