Roska

Once Quinn came back in from the cold, the three of them ate dinner in silence. Roska wanted to tell Q about the breakthrough he and Aiden had found while researching the history of the turmio. He wanted to tell his brother that they had a plan for stopping it, recapturing the demon before it got too strong and started killing, but he knew his brother wasn’t in the right headspace to hear what Roska was going to say.

Lyra had warned them off telling him as soon as they’d started vocalizing their plan. She’d hushed them—actually hushed both Roska and Aiden—told them not to discuss it when she was within earshot, then she disappeared upstairs with Demoni and Aleerah.

Roska felt a strong sense of respect for her. She knew that their plan was going to be risky—the type of risky that Q would refuse to even entertain—so she’d taken herself out of it. If she didn’t know the plan, then Q couldn’t know it and Roska could do what needed to be done.

If he was being completely honest with himself, Roska didn’t want this to be the plan either, but according to Aiden and their research, it was the only way.

Roska hoped that he would get to see Elena once more before it all came to an end.

The next morning, they had an incredibly awkward breakfast of oats, eggs, and more of Aiden’s magical coffee. The weighty silence was broken when Lyra snapped and said, “This is stupid. We are all adults here. Yes, bad shyt happened. Yes, you have every right to be pissed about it, but come the mux on, Q. We need to get past this. Assuming you want to save the whole damn world and get our sister back. That is what you want, isn’t it?”

Quinn glared at her but said nothing.

“Of course that’s what you want,” Lyra continued, walking over to sit directly in front of him in the chair he’d scorched the day before. “So get over yourself long enough to make that happen. You can hate the man forever—if you really think that will be productive—but right now we need to get our priorities straight.”

Roska couldn’t help but admire the way she spoke to Q. Roska himself would never have taken such a forceful tone with his brother, but Lyra and Q had a very different relationship and it clearly worked well for them.

Q still didn’t speak, but Roska could see some of his brother’s rage get bottled back up and forced down deep inside Q’s internal lockbox. It was an unhealthy habit that the siblings had all developed in an attempt to cope with their respective hellsish upbringings.

Q gave Lyra a curt nod, offered a weak smile to Roska, and turned back to the last of his oatmeal. He still didn’t speak, but he finally seemed willing to listen, and that was enough for now.

Roska accepted his brother’s concession and dove into the plan that he and Aiden had begun to formulate the night before.
