As I walk Jezebel to her room, all I can think about is how utterly beautiful she is. Her cheeks are bright with color, and her eyes flutter with each step she takes. My hand rests on her waist, guiding her as she stumbles through the hallway.

Jezebel holds a candle in her hand, this time deciding she wanted visibility for the journey. I can see exceptionally well in the darkness, but sometimes, I forget she can not.

“What do you think about this place?” she asks, gazing up into my eyes. I take a moment to consider her question before answering.

“This building differs from the other human dwellings I encountered.” I tighten my hand around her hips.

“No, I mean what do you think about Earth. What was your planet like?”

I gaze down at her, a frown on my face. I’ve never thought to explain my past to her, but it’s something I should have done long ago. Maybe my story will help her understand some of the mystery surrounding my people.

“Azure was… beautiful. We had biological diversity, the same as this planet. Trees and flora that bloomed under the bright red sun. Twin moons that shone through the darkest of nights. It was old and new all at the same time.” I smile as I stare ahead, lost in the distant memories of my travels from the Scholar Towers to the capitol. I miss it terribly, but at the same time, everything I want is here. Jezebel, a family, a home.

“Did you hunt humans?” Her nails dig into the side of my wrists as she stumbles over her feet. I clutch her tighter as we continue.

“On Azure? Ha! Humans were a foreign concept. We fed from scaled beasts that thrived in the desert lands.” The creatures were large, some of them harboring enough blood to feed an entire dhampir family for a year or more. Eventually, they became extinct, along with all the other life bearers.

“Did they speak to each other, like humans? Did they have families? Children?” Jezebel’s voice breaks.

Her heart quickens, and I can feel her blood rushing beneath my palm. She still fears me, but I cannot blame that. I’ve come to realize that dhampirs are something to fear. We are the monsters under these humans’ bed.

“They weren’t high functioning beings, just animals. I promise you this.” I stop walking, and she inclines her head. Her throat bobs.

“So why did you attack humans when you arrived?”

My heart squeezes, sending an ache through my body. I had assumed that Kora had explained the bloodlust and madness to the other females, but it seems I was mistaken.

“We weren’t in our right mind.”

“So you were mental?” She steps out of my embrace, placing both hands on her hips.

Her accusatory tone sends a dagger through my chest. I want, need her to understand this. I didn’t come here seeking to kill. I don’t even know how we arrived on the other side of the darkness. Even so, my excuses aren’t enough to soothe this ache.
