I Am Your Father

Jenna had a couple of her magic treats wrapped in multiple layers of plastic in the small bag she’d slung across her body. The containers were like a set of nesting dolls and she’d found it was the best way to conceal the scent of the treats.

A few of the alpaca, the ones from the Voyager crew she thought, were grazing nearby, and she wanted to acclimatize Zilla to their presence.

Khan was across the field hanging out with The Next Generation ladies. Hopefully, they’d keep him occupied.

Jenna didn’t like keeping Zilla penned all the time. She was used to grazing. Her old bones meant she didn’t wander too far, and she liked to hang out with Dragon, who wouldn’t go in the pen on demand.

The two pretended they hated each other and everyone else, but in reality, they craved companionship like most creatures.

Even Jenna.

She forced her eyes to remain on her task and not wander up to the farmhouse.

Noah offered companionship. And the possibility of a little bit more.

Jenna had never been so attracted to a man before. None of the men she’d dated had ever caused this pull. She’d always been able to compartmentalize her emotions, and she’d never allowed herself to feel anything stronger than affection.

She was way past affection with Noah, and her attempts at compartmentalizing were futile.

He occupied her thoughts when she was awake and asleep.

The dreams were hotter than any reality she’d ever experienced. His kisses and those strong hands promised even more.

Zilla. Back to Zilla.

“Good afternoon, Zilla. I’ve got a couple of hours before my next appointment. You want to come out and play for a bit?”

Zilla’s ears perked up, and the cranky old lady trotted her way.

As usual, Zilla picked up her pace and lowered her head to butt Jenna on her way by.

Because she was ready for it, she avoided the bump.

Zilla shook her head, annoyed at the missed opportunity, and wandered over to a patch of grass.

Dragon honked and flapped over to join her.

One of the smaller alpacas looked up and watched them.

“That’s a good girl, Naomi. You are Naomi, aren’t you?”

The alpaca took a couple of steps forward, then looked back to the bigger animals. When none of them seemed concerned, Naomi stepped forward again.

Zilla looked up, and her eyes narrowed. Jenna reached for her bag, but didn’t pull out the containers.

For the next ten minutes, the small alpaca and the goat eyed each other warily, moving slowly closer.

Jenna relaxed and sat down on the grass to watch.

From this angle, she could see the farmhouse. And Noah.

He was pacing out an area off to the west of the house. Closer to the edge of the forest. A nice flat area that would make a good space for a barn.

He was consulting with his phone and then moving again. Visualizing various options, she assumed.

The touch to her head had her startling, but she didn’t yelp. Looking up and back, she found the larger alpacas were as curious as she was.
