One last Panzer battle in Fürstenwalde part 1
The final call for the Panzer Lehr, June 5th, 1947
âColonel!â yelled Slazenger, the Panzer driver. âThe Ruskies are driving around our position on the left.â âStromer,â said Walder trying to be as calm as possible in this maelstrom of a battle. âTarget the lead tank in that column trying to flank us. 450 meters to the left, by the wrecked locomotive.â âYes, sir,â answered the young gunner. âSlazenger, start to back us up.â The tank started moving while its turret traversed to face and target the Russian tank that Walder had ordered Stromer to fire at.
The Tiger III lurched backward, and everyone shook a little from the move. A powerful blast destroyed the partially standing brick wall that covered the Panzerâs right flank. The hit was the last straw for the demolished building, and its leftover crumbled in a shattering of pieces and dust. âMore enemies to the right!â yelled Slazenger. Walder panicked for a moment but didnât dare show it. Their position was impossible to hold, and he knew they were in grave danger. As if fate wanted to tell him he was right to be worried, the Tiger III, right beside their position on the right, exploded in cataclysmic fury, hit by a T-54 high-velocity armor-piercing shell. The Panzerâs cupola exploded upward, while the rest of the interior burned a bright white for a couple of seconds before fizzling out and exploding a second time as its ammunition magazine blew up. By then, Walder and his crew were thankfully far enough that the shrapnel and blast only scratched their tank.
Slazenger swerved the Panzer left, yanking everyone and getting Hans to miss his target by a very wide margin.â Damn, Slaz! Stop rocking the tank around,â yelled the young kid. âCanât help it, just trying to maneuver through this damned rubble and half-demolished buildings.â
âStop bickering,â said Erich in a stern tone. âIt isnât time for that. Just do your job. Stromer, aim again and destroy the lead tank.â âYes, boss,â answered the gunner. By then, the Russian tank he wanted to destroy had advanced almost to a large square where there wasnât enough rubble. If he made it, it would enable the rest of the Soviet T-54s to deploy, as they were advancing in a single file through a narrow street, hemmed between the demolished buildings on both sides.
Stromer traversed the turret some more, and finally, Slazenger was able to stop behind a large red brick wall that would protect them from the tanks coming on their other flank. The twenty seconds of quiet enabled for a perfect shot by Hans. The 128mm KWK shell landed square on the Soviet tankâs flank, where the track and the upper portion of the machine met. The shell entered like it was butter and pierced the armor cleanly to the other side. A flash explosion followed it, so every tanker inside the hull was vaporized instantly. The tank thus swerved awkwardly to the left and hit a pile of rubble, stopping dead.
