Not ten minutes later, Mary Elizabeth threw the covers aside and made her way into the bathroom. Rest? She’d had more than enough rest. What she wanted was to know what was wrong with Colin. Of all the sorry excuses, her needing rest classified as the sorriest. The man was running, and she was determined to find out what had spooked him all of a sudden.

As far as she was concerned, last night had dictated the terms of their marriage with as much importance as the words they’d spoken before the priest. They would have a real marriage, in every sense of the word, and that did not include her husband running off and hiding—from her or from himself.

Showered, she dressed in a lightweight shift dress in deference to the promise of the rapidly rising humidity of the day ahead, and went in search of her husband. Tracking him down was a simple enough task. Knowing him as she did, he’d probably retreated to his rooms downstairs. No doubt locked himself inside that little office space at the back of the house, the one with the windows overlooking the garden, the same one she’d caught him looking out of to watch her on more than one occasion.

She knocked on the closed door, but didn’t wait for him to invite her inside. They were married now, she didn’t have to wait to be invited. All she had to go on was the example set by her parents. There’d never been a locked door between them, so to her way of thinking, there’d be no closed doors in her marriage, either.

Colin looked up at her from behind his desk. Surprise mingled with apprehension in this pale green eyes. He was freshly shaven and held a cup of steaming black coffee in his hand. Her breath stilled momentarily. There simply weren’t enough days in the year for her to get used to his good looks.

She hadn’t come to see him just to admire him, they needed to talk. “What do you think you’re doing?” she asked him as she closed the door behind her and leaned against it.

He set his coffee cup down on the desk. “Getting some work done,” he said.

He wasn’t going to make this easy, she could see that much from his closed expression. “That’s not what I’m talking about. Why did you run off earlier?”

His attempt to appear surprised failed miserably. “Run off?”

“Yes,” she said, pushing off the door and crossing the room. “Run off. I thought we were having a lovely time, then all of a sudden you can’t get away from me fast enough.”

He shrugged and reached for a stack of papers on the credenza behind him. “I thought, given your condition—”

“My condition?” She gave a caustic bark of laughter and parked her butt on the edge of his desk. “Now you’re speakin’ malarkey.”

He leaned back in his chair. “Excuse me?”

She knew a stall tactic when she heard one. “I think you’re hearin’ me just fine,” she said.
