Chapter Six - Planning and Preparation

"Luck is where preparation meets opportunity."

- Seneca

T he morning after Quiong's capture Uncle was waiting for the three when they awoke.

"I will try to teach you some of what my master taught me. There is very little time, but you must be able to defend yourself against the Sorceress."

"... and Chiyou." Marcus added. His back and legs still ached and his stomach was hurting again.

Uncle shook his head. "If Chiyou is freed, run. There is no fighting Chiyou."

A silence lingered over the group for a moment.

"Great power is in the chi of the animals we use. However, far greater is that within you. You cannot over power the Sorceress. Her power is great; she has the staff of the Magus, and the medallion that holds his power."

"We have the crystal shards," Marcus offered.

"You do. But if you take them, you risk them falling into the hands of the Sorceress and adding to her power," Uncle warned.

With a shrug of his shoulders, Marcus brushed aside what he considered endless pessimistic fear from Uncle.

"I've seen now that you will do what you want." Uncle paused as if hoping that his disappointment in Marcus's rebelliousness would have an effect. It did not. "Yes, I've seen that you will do what you want, but this is what I advise. Sneak into the Hall, rescue Quiong, take the staff and a ding. She will not be able to proceed with her plan without all nine ding, and we will have the proof needed for Emperor Wu Ding to take action."

Marcus nodded and the twins did as well. "That actually sounds like a pretty smart plan."

"Roquen destroy evil," Roquen added enthusiastically.

"Do not confront the Sorceress unless forced to. I will teach you what you need to get in and out of the Hall. But to defeat the Sorceress is beyond my abilities." He paused. "I do not believe the Ding of Chiyou can be destroyed... don't waste time in attempting to."

"Even with the crystal?" Marcus asked.

"Perhaps with the whole crystal, but even trying would undoubtedly end your chances of escaping undetected. Using the crystal also carries risk."

"... but we would save the world that way, and be done," Marcus argued.

Uncle shook his head in frustration. "Or perhaps the crystal awakens Chiyou. These are strange powerful forces you are toying with." The two stared at each other for a moment.

"Let's rescue Quiong and take a ding. If everything is going smoothly, we can figure out what the next step is. Quiong may have learned something while there," Layen suggested breaking the tension.

"So train us, apprentice magician."

Uncle gave Marcus an annoyed glare. "Follow me," he said as he led them into the forest. The sun was still low in the sky and filled the woods with shadows as shafts of lights broke through the canopy in different places. The smell of morning dew and the subtle songs of the birds were nearly enough to make the three youths forget the dire predicament they faced.
