What to do with Lugh
âTha wasnât bad. Try another shot. Track my voice.â
I picked up a grape and aimed it in his direction, chewing on my lower lip. âItâs not that I canât hear you. Iâve got my Compass back, so I can locate you even if youâre silent. Itâs that my aim is sometimes not super way perfect. I was better at this when I could see. There are too many factors that rely on sight when youâre trying to throw something into someone elseâs mouth from across the room.â
âSounds like an excuse.â Lugh wasnât harsh, but he wasnât lenient, either. He wouldâve made an excellent soccer coach.
I squinted in his direction. âLook, new guy. Aim that tough love somewhere else. This is way out of my league. And Iâve hit your face four times already.â
âAye, but weâre aiming for my mouth, which youâve missed every single time. The direction is right, but the thrust is off.â
âLike I said. Blindness. Probably why not too many blind people are toting gun permits.â
âIf weâre roommates for the foreseeable future, I like knowing ye can defend yourself.â
My face fell as reality seeped into play time. âI used to be better at this. I mean, not like The Hulk or anything, but I could at least throw a few decent punches to give myself some headway.â
âSounds like youâre feeling sorry for yourself. We can do tha, if ye want.â
I rolled the dewy grape between my thumb and forefinger, taking a moment to contemplate what I actually wanted my life to look like. Did I want to be sad? I mean, I had reasons, sure. But what would that get me in the end? I would be sad, and that would be my prize in it all. Iâd held actual division championship trophies in my hands, and liked the weight of those far better than the weight of this. âI think I want to try again.â
âTha sounds like more fun than feeling sad all day.â
I lobbed the grape at where I was pretty sure his tongue was, but my thrust was still off, so I fell short and hit his chin. I threw up my arms in frustration. âUgh! I suck at life.â
Lugh chuckled at my dramatics. âThis is kind of fun. I donât have anyone I can train like this. I left my Faîte persona behind decades ago.â
I motioned between us. âIâm glad we get along. I mean, I know you live in Europe and Iâm in America, but after this is all over, itâll be nice to know that thereâs someone else out there whoâs not aging, and who gets how weird it is to live in both worlds.â
Kerdik had left me with Lugh and taken Remy out to study the Farouche Vampires in Ãireland for the day, to see if they could come up with a better way for me to heal them. Though Lugh didnât acquiesce to my pity party, he was fair and decently kind. Weâd struck a pretty easy back-and-forth, so I couldnât complain that I was holed up in the cabin with him.
