Chapter 8 Missing

No one had missed Greer that evening. It was quitting time, and Foster had rushed out to the airport to handle Bureau matters. Everyone assumed that Greer had gone home to rest. He did, after all, come into work one day after getting trounced by the three-story building. It made sense for him to rest.

Foster did try to call him to give him an update late that night, but it went straight to voicemail. Foster didn’t even give it a second thought. It had been three days since Foster had had any sleep, and he decided that Greer was right to go off-grid for a few hours. He needed to do the same. In his case, however, going off-grid meant going home early and placing his phone on call-forwarding to the Bureau. They would filter his calls. If it was urgent, a deputy would come by his house.

Chris spent the night in agony but did manage to find some time to sleep. Little Chris was in his room, and that helped. Seeing the little boy reassured him that he was doing the right thing. But the part that was haunting him was whether he got the riddle right.

He helped little Chris down early the next day and got him packed off to school. He didn't know how one of the women would be released or where they would be. He spent the morning helping Joe until he saw there was activity at the makeshift sheriff's office. Cars spun out of their bays, and they rushed down Main only to stop at the closed diner.

He stood at the curb watching. The sheriffs didn’t have access to the door, so he could see them make their way to the back and find a way in.

That’s it, Chris thought. That’s where he has left the body. He started moving toward the diner. His walk turned to a jog and then accelerated into a sprint. He could see that Dr. Wrangler was on point this time, and she was in the building with the drone atop her, monitoring. As he got to the diner, so did Foster.

“Who is it?” Chris asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Can I come?”

Foster thought for a minute and felt that Chris had been helpful this far. He also figured he would be able to watch the look on his face. "Just stick close to me."

The two men walked into the diner. Dr. Wrangler stood watching the scene and Chris’ heart sank. It was not what he had thought. There were two figures clumped on the booth – their booth. Only one appeared to be human while the other did not.

As Foster approached, Wrangler announced. “This one is different.”

“What does that mean?” Foster asked.

“This one is alive.”
