“How are you holding up?” Sharp asked with an air of genuine concern.

“Good as can be expected. Things are really tense right now. You couldn’t have picked a worse time to call me away. This better be good.”

“It’s Kelly. He’s working the bodies of the robberies and he’s digging hard into Walsh.”

“What’d you tell him?”

“Told him we got a guy on the inside.”

O’Malley’s nose scrunched and his eyes narrowed in anger. “You exposed me to Michael Kelly? What were you thinking? That boy scout is going to rip this thing apart.”

“I didn’t expose you. I exposed the idea of you in the hopes he’d see the light and realize there is more to this than just a couple homicides.”

Still seething, O’Malley said, “How’d Saint Michael take the news? Did he immediately back down?”

Sharp looked at White. “Not exactly.”

“Do you know what I’ve sacrificed for this assignment? Do you know the impact it’s had on my life? I’ve spent years splitting my life. Sneaking around to see my wife. And now I’m losing her to cancer. I’ve given everything. We’re too close to seeing this through to have Kelly screw it all up. How’d Kelly even end up with the case? I thought Cliff Anderson was supposed to get it assigned to him. If so, that idiot would still be sitting at his desk trying to type up the first case.”

“There are some things outside of our control. Anderson was kicked out of Homicide recently. I guess his ability to botch an investigation finally caught the eye of his superiors.”

O’Malley sighed. “Shit luck I guess.”

“Seems so. In Anderson’s unexpected exit, Kelly got the case.”

“Make sure you keep him off my ass. I’ve got enough to worry about without him playing hero.”

Sharp gave a pensive pause. “Maybe it’s time to shut this operation down.”

“What? Are you out of your damn mind?” O’Malley’s fair skin reddened. “Shut it down?”

“Nobody was supposed to die. That wasn’t the agreement.”

O’Malley’s face remained red, but his lips curled into a faint smile. “Like you said—some things are out of my control.”

Sharp glared hard at the man. “I think it’s time for you to come home, Patrick. We’ll do what we can from here.”

O’Malley looked away and grew quiet. “Home? I’ve got nothing to go home to. Karen is failing. It’s stage four. Doctors have given her months at best,” he whispered. “This is all I have left. Let me see this through. Let me finish what we started. At least then it won’t all be for nothing.”

White cleared his throat and interrupted the moment. “If you’re staying—” He shot a glance at Sharp. “Then we’re going to need some assistance from you with something.”

O’Malley turned his attention to the man seated in the front passenger seat. “And what’s that?”

“I’ve got a guy doing a buy into the crew. Decent weight. Two bricks of dope.”

“I haven’t heard anything about it.”

White raised an eyebrow. “That’s disappointing. I thought you were in the know. You’re supposed to be the guy who knows the inner workings of things.
