PICNIC SHELTER CONSTRUCTIONS

Birch is often used to build temporary gazebos or chuppahs for wedding ceremonies. Because the wood’s not perfectly straight, it’s best to start with a plan for something like a picnic shelter, but remain open to improvisation in terms of how best to layer the wood to square it up. You can see our basic plan drawn here. We overlapped the top beams with the verticals to make it less wobbly. Bottom line: the more connection points, the better. When you’re done with the structure, tie it down at the corners for extra security. We recommend connecting the top joints (the connection points) by rope to stakes in the ground.
