Boar’s Rock

Lia’s head bobbed, eyes slowly opening at loud voices from the entry. A moment later, the door opened, Heather rushing inside.

“Ach, it’s true. Blaine was shot.” She moved closer to the bed, examining his bandaged shoulder. “How’s the lad doing?”

Standing, Lia bent over Blaine, touching his forehead. “There’s no fever. He passed out when I removed the bullet and hasn’t stirred since.”

Caleb moved to stand behind Heather, placing his hands on her waist. “Nate and Geneen are outside talking to Cal about what happened. Was Blaine able to tell you anything?”

Lia shook her head. “No, he didn’t say anything about the shooting.” She rested her hip against the edge of the bed. “I can’t imagine anyone wanting to hurt Blaine or Cal.”

“I’d have thought the same until someone burned down his barn.” Heather placed a hand on her stomach, moving to stretch her back.

“Sit down, Heather.” Caleb grabbed the back of a chair, setting it next to her.

Lia walked to the window, opening it enough to let a cooling breeze cleanse the room. “How did you find out about the shooting?”

Caleb massaged Heather’s shoulders, his gaze fixed on Blaine. “Cal sent a rider over. He knew Nate would be back at the ranch for supper. We came right over.”

“How is he?” Nate stood in the hall, looking at his friend.

Geneen pushed past him to stand over Blaine. She touched his forehead, a finger skimming down his face, saying nothing as a single tear slid down her cheek. Looking up, her gaze locked on Lia.

“Nate told us you were here. I meant to come by sooner.” Brushing the tear away, she stepped next to her. “I’m Geneen, Nate’s wife.”

“I know. I’ve heard about you from your family. I’m Permilia Jacobs, but I prefer Lia.”

Heather turned to face her. “So you’re the lass Blaine has been pining about since moving here.”

A slight blush crept up Lia’s face. “Oh, I doubt he’d pine for me. We’re just friends, nothing more.”

Heather snorted. “Ah, lass, you’ve no idea what you’re saying.”

Lia’s brows scrunched together. Opening her mouth to reply, she closed it at Blaine’s moan. Moving to the bed, she bent over him.

“Blaine?” Lia looked at the bandage, seeing no sign of blood. “Blaine, can you hear me?”

His lips parted, eyes opening enough to see her above him.

“Lia,” he breathed out.

Taking his hand, the lines of worry on her face softened. “I’m here. How are you feeling?”

“Awful. Do you have water?”

Geneen poured a glass, handing it to Lia. Placing a hand under his head, she lifted Blaine enough to take a sip. When his right hand gripped her wrist, pulling it back for more, she set his head back on the pillow.

“You can only have a sip for now. I’ll give you more in a few minutes…if you behave.” She heard Heather snicker.

“Who’s here?” Blaine shifted, trying to focus on the others.

“All four of us are here, lad.” Heather stood, moving so he could see her.

“Cal sent a man to the ranch to get us,” Caleb added.
