Chapter 13

It would be great if I could say I had a long and boring wait. But, in reality, less than thirty minutes pass before my extra senses pick up on an energy approaching from the direction of this morning’s campsite.

Taking several deep breaths, I run through what little backstory I’ve created and attempt to calm my nerves.

When a man breaks through the tree line and sees me, he freezes. His left hand immediately goes to the hilt of the large hunting knife on his belt.

I stand and offer a friendly wave. “Hey. Hi, are you Matt?”

His face remains stoic, but I easily pick up on the flurry of emotions racing beneath the surface. He’s frantic. Totally surprised. Definitely intrigued.

Best if I keep my rig rolling. “I’m Darcy Brown. Upstart Mining sent me to do a geological survey. They said this old mineshaft would be a great place to start. You know how many decisions go into equipment, chemicals—well, you name it.” I sincerely hope he doesn’t expect me to name it, because I know absolutely nothing about mining for copper or anything else.

His hand slowly returns to his side. He’s going to play along.

Hallelujah.

“Yeah, I’m Matt. I expected you yesterday, Darcy.”

“Oh well, I’m a geologist, not a Boy Scout. My ol’ orienteering skills aren’t quite up to snuff.” I’m not sure why I’m speaking like an eighty-year-old man, but this is the road I started down, so best keep the pedal to the metal. “I didn’t want to head in there all willy-nilly. Figured it was best to wait until you got back. Took a peek behind that canvas, though. Boy, oh boy. It’s dark as the inside of my mama’s cellar.”

He tries to offer a light chuckle, but there’s tension in every part of his body. “I wouldn’t recommend going in there this week. That’s what I planned to tell you. We had a real heavy rain a couple days ago, and those tunnels fill up fast.”

Wow. This guy is almost as good at lying as me. “You’ve got a solid point, son. I say we keep to the higher tunnels. Water levels should recede by tomorrow. There’s a lot of limestone under this area and it drains quickly.” That sounds believable to me. A brief smile and nod in his direction, and I sense he agrees.

The clever captor takes a new approach. “Was that your campsite I came through up by the beach?”

“You betcha.”

Something in his stance shifts, and I worry he knows I wasn’t traveling alone.

“I didn’t see any evidence of a breakfast or lunch. You must be starved. Why don’t we head back to my camp and heat up a portion of venison stew?”

I place a hand over my heart. “Well, aren’t you the sweetest guy? I couldn’t possibly. Truth is, I had a bowl of savory oatmeal this morning, and it’s still sticking to my ribs, like God intended. You know, I have to be back in the office to make my report in less than three days.
