Emrys could move more freely in the West Wing, with its excess shadows and memorium for all who were once lost. He was especially glad Amie hadn’t chosen to rebuild it, given he could follow her to Llewyon’s library and roost. It had been a sanctuary of theirs once.

Even with the unwelcome addition of the Rumplekin ever at her side, Emrys remained close as they gathered around Llewyon’s findings.

“The three main gates are here, here, and here, or so as of this recording in the year 1736. Little changes in the Borderlands, and so you may count on this being where the Unseelie will most closely guard,” Llewyon said.

Amie kept a hand on the gryphon’s feathery neck and nodded along. She turned from the maps to the Blackbriar twins standing opposite them. James had left to gather their supplies, though he, too, was joining them.

“Do either of you have a place in mind we could slip through? From what Feather tells me, it’ll need to be a place where you can see clearly. You’ll need specific details to travel somewhere other than a main gate.”

Faye uncrossed her arms to lean over the table and point with the tip of her dagger. “Here. We… lived there for a while. I think we can remember it well enough.”

Jo’s intent stare shifted from Faye to Amie as she leaned her hip against the table. “We won’t know what’ll be waiting for us on the other side.”

Faye nodded and leveled a scowl in Rumplekin’s direction. “Or who.”

Grimwich raised his hands in surrender. “You aren’t the only ones with something to lose should we be caught, Gatekeeper.”

Faye sneered as she pointed her knife at him. “Just be glad she’s in charge. She’s the only reason I haven’t already slit you from navel to sternum.”

Amie’s sigh interrupted Grim’s laughter. “Please tell me this isn’t how our entire trip’s gonna be.”

“I’ll behave if he will,” Faye snapped.

“To be frank, Faye, he’s not the one I’m worried about,” Amie deadpanned.

An odd chuff escaped Llewyon, and he raised a paw to slide another book over the map’s surface as Amie turned her focus back to him. “No matter where you arrive, you’ll need to hurry. A surge of nixy like that will draw attention, not to mention…”

Emrys felt the pull before he could reach for Amie’s thread again. Where she had been standing, the room brightened, scorching as the sun until he could no longer see or feel.

In a blur of darkness, he saw Nimue’s smile. Her fingers traced patterns down his bare chest as her lips hovered over his, and she whispered, “When this war is finally over, we should get away somewhere together.”

His laugh had been too bitter to mask the hope fluttering in his chest. “What realm could stand to welcome monsters like us?” Her curls brushed over his cheek as she leaned over his ear and surrounded him in the scent of her: snow and forest and a fresh strike of lightning…

“Any realm we are together will be our home.
