19.

The Barracuda sat parked on the airport’s black tarmac, at the lip of the rented hangar. Inside, electric light streamed from the open belly of the Imperator, ramp down and the video wall crackling with data. Kevin had their target’s photograph up on the main screen.

“Geordie Tynes. Here in town—officially, that is—repping his start-up company, Eon Technologies. They’re on the hunt for angel investors, and Geordie came to TechTopia to show off a prototype and stir up some good press.”

“And then there’s his real reason,” Harmony said, “using the conference as cover to hold a secret auction. He stands to make millions. There’s some start-up capital right there.”

April sat back in her wheelchair, her chin resting on her curled knuckles as she studied the screen.

“That may be his actual motivation. Whatever he’s looking to divest himself of, it’s something the underworld—criminal and infernal alike—is interested in. And I agree with your assessment; the man is no criminal mastermind. This could be Tynes trying to go straight and turn an illegal asset into a legal one. Cutting ties to his past and building a new future.”

“What’s the prototype?” Jessie asked.

“Pretty damn cool, actually,” Kevin said. “If it really works.”

He sat at the console, rattling off commands. An article from a tech site popped up on one of the smaller screens, showing Tynes’s stock photograph along with a small frameless television screen. The television was bent in a model’s hands, holding a clear image even as the screen buckled like it was about to fold in half.

“Flexible LED displays?” Harmony’s brow furrowed. “Those already exist. Never understood why I’d want to bend something I’m trying to watch, but if I wanted to, I could get one tomorrow.”

“Not like this. Tynes calls it the CrystalFlex. He says he’s invented a completely malleable multipurpose LED display. Completely, as in you can fold it, crumple it up, make origami out of it, and it still works. And it’s super light. You could literally buy a hundred-and-twenty-inch TV, roll it up like a carpet, take it over to a buddy’s house, and unpack it when you get there. It’ll spring back to its original, flat form no matter how many times you fold it, good as new. Oh, and it’s got 4K resolution.”

“That sounds vaguely impossible,” Jessie said.

“You’re not the first to say so.” Kevin clicked his mouse. Another article sprang up beside the first. Fools and Their Money: Eon Asks for Big Bucks, Offers Little Proof. “Nobody’s actually seen the CrystalFlex prototype outside of very controlled and limited demonstrations. Tomorrow is the first time it’s going to be shown off to the general public, and a lot of people think it’s a hoax. That’s not the really interesting part, though.”

The TechTopia website blossomed on another screen. Puff pieces, ladled out by PR departments, but he magnified Tynes’s bio and highlighted two crucial lines. “Before setting out on his new venture, Geordie Tynes spent his early career working at the right hand of the legendary engineer Ezra Talon.
