Chapter 18

Denver, Colorado

Day 06

As it sometimes happened, Garrity’s wife had fallen asleep sandwiched between Hector and Stacy, which had, at least, made it a bit easier for Garrity to peel himself away and go through his nightly routine. The routine was exhausting, both mentally and physically, but without Morris, Jake, Scott, or Liebert, he was the only one who could be bothered to do it. Walking down the narrow eastward corridor toward the rear fire exit, Garrity knew that if he mentioned it to either Beth or Meredith, they both would have likely volunteered to take a shift, just to make it easier on him, but Garrity had been working security at City Hall for years— it was second nature, and although it consumed a few hours of precious sleep time, it was worth the effort.

Stopping by the fire door, he checked to be sure it was securely latched, slamming down on the crash bar to ensure it wouldn’t open. Was it a coincidence, or had they actually established a secure base of operations— he couldn’t be entirely sure, but he didn’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth. Moving through the building was a melancholy experience, filled with a mixture of familiar memories and the burning acid of guilt in his guts. No matter how hard he tried to focus on his family, on the good that had come out of the takeover of City Hall, he couldn’t help but remember the events that had led up to it. How he’d made a bargain with the devil, a man named Willis Randolph. He hadn’t just let Willis into City Hall, he’d helped him kill people— innocent people. Granted, the people they’d killed had their own share of faults, but murder was murder and he had to stop for a moment, drawing in a deep breath, trying to battle back a feeling of anxiety that weakened his knees. How could he look himself in the mirror ever again after killing those people in cold blood?

He’d put his own family above them, sacrificed their life for the benefit of his loved ones, but that hardly made it right. Leaning against one wall, he had to draw in deep, long breaths,
