Looking up from the telegram, Bullock said, “Greendale? That old rustler? What was his first name?”

“Gus,” Roosevelt said. “Gus Greendale. And yes, he was a rustler and outlaw. Many years ago, while I was running my ranch, I helped the law track down him and his gang. As far as I know, he’s been in prison for the past fifteen years. I had no idea he was out.”

“Looks like he’s been carrying a grudge for you all that time,” Bullock said.

Roosevelt took the telegram back and nodded. “Indeed. But as I said, I don’t believe Greendale wrote this himself. Nor was he the sort of man who could put together such an audacious scheme. He has allies, and they’re the ones who are truly to blame for what’s happened.”

“That makes sense,” Bullock admitted. “I never crossed trails with Greendale, but I remember hearing about him. He was no Jesse James, never more than a small-timer. But that doesn’t make him any less dangerous now.”

“No, it certainly does not.” Roosevelt squared his shoulders. “But at least we know the next step.”

“And that is . . . ?”

“I’m going to the Dutchman’s,” the President declared.
