Influenza

During an epidemic of Panama flu in Israel in 1993, children as young as 5 years of age and adults up to the age of 56 years were recruited in a preliminary, randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study of Sambucol® syrup for the treatment of influenza-like symptoms. Patients excluded from the study had shown negative results in tests for viruses, received antibiotics for tonsillitis or streptococcal infection, or had failed to consistently take the assigned treatment (Sambucol® or placebo) or visit the attending physician. Patients of both sexes were enrolled (9 females and 18 males); however, the number of children in the study was not stated and the placebo was not described [99].
