Collingwood began the second quarter with the breeze at their backs, but once it again it was St Kilda that came out the more ferocious of the two sides. In the first passage of play, Winmar battled the Magpies’ Alan Richardson for possession of the ball on the wing, kicking and paddling the ball in front of him. Then, with Richardson retarding Winmar at the Saints’ 50-metre line, McAdam burst through, picking up the ball and breaking away at speed. He steadied himself with a bounce and ran into the open goal. Less than 30 seconds had elapsed and the Saints were back in front, with McAdam having kicked all three of their goals.

One minute later the gangly Peter ‘Spida’ Everitt (playing just his fourth match) marked and goaled from 20 metres out after play had again been directed through McAdam. St Kilda were now 7 points in front. A Brad Rowe goal reduced the lead, but then Nathan Burke screwed the ball around his body to find the free McAdam, and Gilbert had his fourth goal of the game six minutes into the second quarter.

The intensity of the game was ratcheted up another notch as Collingwood began to match the endeavour of St Kilda, with both sides exerting tremendous pressure. By midway through the quarter the teams had traded goals. Winmar was imposing himself with some great tackles as well as precise kicks and had 10 possessions already. Robert Harvey, another emerging star for the Saints, had 14 touches. Then suddenly Harvey tore his right quadriceps and had to be carried off the ground. A few minutes later, Winmar gathered the ball singlehanded under intense pressure and kicked perfectly to set up another attacking move for the Saints. With St Kilda missing the run of Harvey, Collingwood started to gain the run of play. Yet despite kicking the next two goals, the Pies were squandering most of their opportunities, much to the frustration of the largely partisan Victoria Park crowd.

McAdam was being played up forward. With the ball mainly in Collingwood’s half of the ground, he was denied the opportunity to impose himself as strongly on the game. But late in the quarter he received a handball among traffic in St Kilda’s forward fifty. Deftly evading three opponents, he created space and sent the ball deep where Darren Bourke snared a vital goal. Magpie tall forward Ron McKeown answered with a goal of his own, and Collingwood went to the main break 58 points to St Kilda’s 50. The crowd was grumbling, however, as the Pies had been wasteful in the last fifteen minutes, kicking 5:7 in the quarter as opposed to the Saints’ 5:4.
