Chapter Seven

There was something about Will that nobody else had. Maybe it was the way he spoke, or the twinkle in his eyes. Perhaps it came from the way he moved or how he handled the people around him.

Whatever it was, it made him special and unique. This world would be a darker place when he left.

It wouldn’t be long. The shaking hands, the twitch in his eye. The speckle of spots along his paper thin skin and the maze of blue veins underneath it. He was withering away and soon, I’d have to say goodbye.

But not now. Not yet.

“You’re writing again,” I noted.

“Indeed, I am.” A flicker passed through his eyes. “How are you liking Helm?”

“He’s nice,” I said as I recalled my adventures with him. “Yes, very determined and courageous.”

Will chuckled to himself. “What about handsome?”

“I don’t know, he’s a horse…?” I supposed that for a stallion, he was beautiful indeed. But what did that have to do with Will’s story?

“For now.” He ignored my curious stare and twirled the quill into the ink. “There’s a lot more to the story. You up for another trip?”

Previously, I would have jumped on the chance to travel back into his universe, but things were different now. My storyteller was coming to the end of his life and I wanted more moments with him. I’d have an infinity to roam through his worlds, but my time with him was limited. And I wanted to make the most of it.

“Maybe later,” I smiled. I placed my hand on his, hoping to halt his writing. I knew he was in a rush to write this story, but I still hadn’t figured out why it was so special to him. The fields, the mountains, Helm… They were all beautiful, intricate, engaging. But why was he spending the last of his energy on this tale?

“Are you sure?” Will pointed his pen at me. “The best part is about to start.”

“Will…”

“I promise, you want to be there for the reveal. The whole reason why I needed to write this story for you. And for me.”

“Maybe later. I just want to sit with you for a moment.” I dusted my cloak off and studied the fragile man in front of me. He was holding onto life with his passion for writing, but it wouldn’t be long before Death found him. Soon, my storyteller would perish and I would be alone again.

While Will was still a part of this realm, I wanted to cherish what time he had left. Every second I had with him, every stolen moment, I wanted them all. For when the solitude came, I’d have these memories to keep me warm.

“Are you okay?” Will reached out to me, his fingers brushing along my hand.

I wasn’t used to humans touching me, but when he did it… It was just so different. It didn’t make me feel uncomfortable, or awkward, or strange. I didn’t panic or retreat into my portal to hide away from any personal contact.
