Chapter 16

The night before the mission, I couldn’t sleep and stared all night at the ceiling. It was clear I wasn’t cut for this. No great future awaited me in the business of spies and vanquishing enemies, but this wasn’t about me. Many have lost their lives because of her, and it reached a boiling point where it was between her and me. Someone had to lose, but one thing I knew for sure, I would put up the best fight of my life. Since my life truly depended on it.

I rose from the bed and put on the black combat suit Troy gave me. He said the clingier the material, the better. And no one could question the suit’s tight fit. I could barely pull it through my limbs. But unfortunately, the zipper in the back represented a bigger issue. I went into the guest room, hoping Mei didn’t sleep. When I approached the door, several unusual noises resounded behind it. I rushed to save my friend with whatever enemy she had to confront. To my surprise, Mei fought with the same issue as me––the darned zipper. Except, she didn’t want to ask for help. Indeed, we shared the independent woman gene. Only, in my case, I had Gabriel. He taught me it was okay to ask for help from those who loved you as they would never use it against you. Now it was my turn to help him. And Mei. “I see the pesky zipper in the back is giving you a hard time,” I said as I entered the room.

“You can say that again. I have never contorted my body this way before, but here I am, trying to bend into a bridge,” Mei said.

I giggled and said, “Let’s help each other. I have the same issue.”

After ending our zipper tribulations, Mei and I returned to my bedroom to see if Athena was awake. She still slept soundly in her crib.

“I’m worried about using Athena’s superpowers and putting her life at risk,” I said, admiring my sweet daughter’s serene sleeping face.

“I share your worries, but without her powers, we wouldn’t be able to do anything. I might look brave, but my heart has been beating faster since I woke up.”

“At least you slept. I’ve been counting so many sheep I risked drowning in their wool.”

My friend hugged me and said, “It will be all right. Troy said he’d take care of the difficult parts. We only need to be there and kick her––”

“You think we can actually do that to the strongest witch ever?”

“With a good plan in place, why not? There’s a precedent. Have you not heard of David and Goliath?” Mei asked. “Can you imagine if David had a team? He wouldn’t even question his success.”

“You just have a knack for making the best out of anything,” I said.

“Hey, it usually works for the better,” said Mei as someone knocked at the door.

“Come in,” I said and welcomed Troy inside the bedroom.

“Good morning, Milady,” said Troy.
